AMD Vs. AMD

I'm looking at a couple of upgrade options; namely the A64 3500+ s939 Winchester on an Abit AV8 3rd EYE, or a 3700+ ClawHammer on an as yet unknown mobo. The 3700+ has the higher speed rating and 1mb L2 cache, but the 3500+ has the dual channel support. I would be wanting to use 2x512mb sticks of Corsair XMS4000, but I could probably change it if there are better options for either avenue.

Basically i'm wondering which would be the better option?

Bear in mind that i'm going for best all round performance (perhaps with a bit more emphasis on gaming), and hopefully some overclocking. Oh, and i'm not really interested in PCI-Express or SLi at the moment.

Mate no contest I would say go for the 939 as the 754 wont give you any room for updating at least they are still making socket 939 mobo's but I dont think they are making any new socket 754 ones plus like you said duel channel support cant realy go wrong

Yep,

Skt 939 all the way.

Don't forget that you are not limited to a 3500 winchester, although they offer the lowest heat output (and therfore best overclock) you can go 3800 or 4000 (if you need the 1mb cache).

939 is the future, 90nm is the future, dual core is the future, none of these will be available on a skt754.

All 939 CPU's have memory controller built in too which maximises memory efficiency (data transfer).

Dont forget the 3200 winchester is a monster overclocker too, so if you have a budget to stick to, drop the CPU spec and go for some gskill DDR ram too.

Good luck
