AMD Ryzen 7 1800X CPU Review

Maybe bye Ryzen version 2 then they MIGHT be in front but that remains to been seen.

Intel may have need the boot up the ass but as i have said don't go writing Intel off i have seen people saying "Downfall of Intel" which i don't buy that for a second.

Ryzen was marketed for gaming and it kinda failed at that for the moment.

Anyone with half a brain would not have written off Intel just because of Ryzen hype.

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet but some sites have reported underwhelming game performance but some gaming vendors have stated that this is normal for a new architecture and we can expect gaming improvements as games are optimized for Ryzen Cpu's in future updates and possibly I think as Bioses mature

That's what I've read as well. With a few months of updates we may see AMD come back a bit. Even if it's just a few percentage that's enough. And with the price reduction of the R5's over the R7's we may see better bang for buck gaming rigs crop up. So even if the R5 1600X doesn't match a 7700K consistently, it'll be cheaper than an i5 while having far superior multi-threaded performance.

The last time AMD took a step like this Intel delivered Sandy Bridge 18 months later....

We havent had a hadware advance like that since. Sandy was a HUUUUUUGE step forward in performance.

It did take them about 18/24 months after the 1090 launch to release it though.

I guess you have to wait now on Cannonlake (next year)

Good find Alien. Thanks for that read
Confirms what me and many of you guys have said. It isn't surprising, but if they can get the big boys to get optimization in there engines, it'll be great for them overall.
Strategy games in general are seriously in need of better optimization for multi threaded CPUs, which just so happens to be Ryzens strong suit

Ah me...! Ryzen overclocks our Thomas rather than the otherway round :D. Probably your overclock equalised the room temp with the cooler temp, you looked to be put out a fair bit of heat, LOL.

I got thru 2 pints of tea and half a dozen Scotch pancakes. You are not doing my waistline any favours :( but you are keeping me hydrated :).

After seven years of famine here's hoping for seven years of fat, this is certainly a good start. Now let us see if the GPU half of the AMD equation can return to clobber Nvidia with reasonable temps and power draw.

By the way the video was not nearly long enough...:disappointed1:.

BTW I'm pretty sure you knew but if you didn't I will tell you any way. You know I am on the spectrum, right? as in the autistic spectrum?

That means everything to me is -

Louder.
Brighter.
Smellier.
More annoying.
Massive hate of imbalance, unfairness and bullies.
Massively exaggerated.

And so on. I am who I am. Oh and I can be a really unempathic SOB too. But that is just me.

Greetings fellow citizen. Neurotypicals rarely get it but I appreciate what you are saying and 90% of it applies to me. They have no clue how far we go to accommodate them already. If and when I am ever going to be in your vicinity, I will make a point of getting in touch and getting you and your lady out of the house. Have a good one now!

SMT & Memory Lattice hickup?

Thank you for the very balanced and professional review of AMD's Rysen 1800X cpu. As you mentioned within your report that the 1800X and the i7 6900K are essentially "twins" at times during testing. You also noticed that the 1800X seems to be lagging in gaming frames per second when compared to other Intel CPU products. I am a little puzzled. Did you test the 1800X with the SMT both on and off during gaming testing, and to be fair also performed the testing likewise for i7 6900K with and without HT? I am suspicions that the SMT maybe giving the 1800X some deficiencies which if true would point to combination of bios (UEFI), game engine optimization, and likely windows driver updates to elevate. Would it be possible to repeat some of the game testing with the SMT deactivated?

Thank you

Terry

Ryzen gaming performance at 100p is still great, just not as great as Intel. This is due to BIOS's, window optimizations from MS, and game developers not yet optimizing the engine to better support Ryzen.
In a few months it all be sorted and kick ass CPUs while start to kick more ass at gaming.

Ye, the fact windows doesnt see it right seems tobe a big thing right now, something i wouldnt mind to see the results off is the fact that normally when we ramp up games that we get that stutter, and in a wierd twist ryzen does not suffer from this.

Would like to see that investigated.

I actually just watched an AdoredTV video and he made some good points about Ryzen gaming performance.

He called out testers that are benching at lower resolutions as indicators of future performance by using the comparison of 2500K vs FX-8350, showing that when that method was used in the past the 2500K was initially a long way ahead but over time the 8350 closed the gap and overtook it. The caveat that it took 4 years+ to happen.

However, AMD are being much more aggressive with Ryzen than they were with BD/PD in trying to get optimisation. This time we have Vulkan in place already, current consoles already making use of 8-core CPUs and potentially the next-gen consoles being based on Zen architecture.

AMD could be in a very strong position where gaming in concerned.

He has a point, yeah. I don't see the full logic behind it as there are arguments to using a low resolution (1080p is not exactly 'low', really) and a high powered graphics card to test the CPU, but those arguments are not airtight. Also you have the argument that very few people will be buying a £500 CPU and a £600 graphics card and pairing it with a £200 monitor so why were reviewers so insistent on it? Guys like Gamers Nexus were, IMO, far too harsh and missed the point.

I think everyone missed the point.

Seems you did too Angry lol

All I know is the mobo availability situation is terrible. I preordered a Hero from Amazon on the 23rd, and an 1800X from Newegg. NE is sending the CPU from the other side of the US by pony express, 8 day shipping.

Amazon still has not even processed preorders for the Asus Hero boards yet. At least eventually when it does ship, it will be two day Prime shipping. Newegg is listing availability tomorrow on the board. I hate ordering there, because I know I will get stuck with another 8 day wait. The only upside would be no sales tax.

Bios 0505

@tinytomlogan: Could you share the BIOS file for version 0505? Im on the same board (prime x370 pro) and the 0504 BIOS has some serious issues and also asus support won't help. They said "get new Ram, or a board from another vendor" kinda unpleasent...
Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance!

Didn't Tom use the 0504 BIOS in that review? I'm not sure he has a newer BIOS.
