AMD Kaveri

i'd like to see an am3+ steamroller but i think its unlikely (no steamroller server chips), current am3+ options i don't consider that great of an upgrade from my 1090t TBH. I'd love to buy a 8 core steamroller chip as a future upgrade (provided its a good cpu and a reasonable price)!

i think amd will concentrate on fm2+ and forget about am3+, the future is in the apus.

If they do Steamroller FX chips then it would most likely be the last real CPU from them.. unless they sell like crazy.

If the newer APU's are on 28nm then i would also assume the FX chips would move from 32nm to 28nm. Should prove to be all around nice upgrade for the die.

Indeed well I guess all we can do is wait an see, its not likely but you never know eh

a steamroller 8 core would be a powerhouse, it is the first implementation of the bulldozer architecture that has major improvements made to it. unlike piledriver which only changed clock speed and improved power consumption.

estimates would suggest that steamroller cores should have a core performance similar to sandy bridge, this is all speculation though. the move to 28nm will help little apart from aiding to integrate a gcn gpu into the apu.

kaveri will be very interesting indeed, if good gains are made in both cpu and gpu power and cost isn't too high amd are on to a winner. Also the gpu will be gcn, making it more in line with their dedicated gpu offerings, so if mantle turns out to be a thing, another win for amd.

"edit" i also think the gpu will be around hd 7790/r7 260x territory, with possible crossfire options with these gpus, only a guess but something about the true audio being in that gpu and no others apart from the 2 flagships gets me thinking.

I say make a FX chip 8 core CPU without a GPU. Saves power and space and possibly could get the chip to perform higher by adding more cpu cache or etc.

you make it sound so easy, amd need to support for HSA. releasing products that don't use it wouldn't be a good idea.

then there is the design/engineering work to make a 8 core steamroller chip.
looking at the server roadmaps which just have steamroller cores in apu based server chips, it seems very unlikely.

i'd love a 8 core steamroller chip, have always thought it would be the first worth while upgrade to my 1090t.

until amd say otherwise i'm not holding my breath for an 8 core steamroller. will likely be intel when i next upgrade cpu

There was a rumour that they'd release a 6 core variant of the Kaveri APU for their enthusiast line a while back. Although the lack of a 6-Core Opteron variant on the server roadmap makes that unlikely too.

Another rumour was that the 4-core Steamroller would actually be an 8-thread part just like the i7-4770k's of the world. I'm not sure I believe that though. Nonetheless, here's hoping...

Anyway, I'm not too worried about upgrading my FX-8350, given that the next-gen consoles are kind of forcing multi-threaded games I think us 8350 owners will be fine for another while. We'll just have to wait and see what the upcoming games that are released on next-gen consoles run like over the coming year.

In bf4 a 8350 and 4670k both at stock( pretty sure at stock) both get the same FPS with the same GPU and settings.

LOL I had to take a second glance at that, I thought it said "Should prove to be all around nice upgrade before I die".

Just read this article over at pcper, pretty interesting if you're interested in Kaveri

Wow that really was a good read, also good news for amd for once.

Ya who knows lol. The rate the market has been going this may very well be true^_^

I'm actually very impressed with what I've seen so far of Kaveri especially watching the video on pcper playing BF4 on medium settings at 1080p averaging ~30fps. Not bad at all :)

inb4 AMD announce a "i7 beater" which is basically a super overclocked A10 with a 290x gpu soldered on the chip for £9999. I really hope AMD don't dick Kaveri up although they've seemed pretty sane with APUs thus far.

They just need to stay competitive and do better marketing wise. They have the performance but not the marketing. Can only sell so much when few people know who you are.
