AMD 64 CPU Help

Hey all.

As some may know - I have installed my Athlon 64 3200+ skt754 CPU on a LAN PARTY UT NF3.

I've run a couple of benchies to see how its performing and found that although the GPU is doing its usual wkd stuff, my CPU is well underperforming against my old XP 3200+.

Both of these run at 2.2GHz, but I was hoping for the 64 to whoop the Barton back into its place.

My aquamark 3 scores have gone down as in the screenie below.

My 3DMark scores have also gone down.

These both have gone down in the "CPU" part of the tests, which is why I put this down to the new CPU.

The only thing I have changed in the BIOS is to set the DRAM frequency to 200 (1:1) as the manual told me to if I had two DDR400 DIMMs installed.

Oh and I set the AGP aperture to 256, to match the vid RAM.

Any help or if you need any more info, then ask away!

How much ram do u have? You should set ur AGP aperature size to be 1/4 your total system memory. IE, if you're running 1gb of ram your aperature should be 256, if ur running 512mb of ram ur aperature should be 128, etc...

Just thought I'd check to make sure that wasn't the problem.

Do you have any Sandray benchy scores from ur XP 3200+ for cpu arithimatic and memory bandwidth that you could compare to the setup ur running now?

And if you haven't done so already, i suggest formatting and starting fresh whenever installing a new mobo/cpu setup, especially in a jump from a 32 to 64bit cpu.

I have 1024mb RAM. And have set it to 256.

I haven't re-formatted, but was hoping to avoid that. I spose I could do that. Means re-downloading SP2 and everything else. Well, my games are on another partition, so they should be intact, right?

EDIT: and I don't have any old benchies like that. Only used to do a couple of benchies for 3d apps.

One improvement I got was in CS:S - a 20+FPS improvement in the stress test.

Move all imperitive files to a backup partition and format ur OS partition. Unfortunately it seems like a drastic measure but I think you will find that your performance results should go up dramatically after a silky smooth format as everything will be configured for your new setup rather than your old setup.

Your games should be fine as long as they arent on ur OS partition :)

You should slipstream Service Pack 2 into your XP Disk. Much better, easier, and time saving in the long run. google search "Slipstreaming SP2"

the main cause of ur loss in cpu performance is Single channel vs Dual Channel. Sandra will report higher bandwidth becoz its buffered ( on Athlon XP the ram scores show as Unbuffered) but the Source test gives u a real life example of the much more efficient structure of ur A64. Ocing that proc will give u even better results . My XP at 2.4 ghz could bench higher than my Athlon 64 @ 2.2 ghz ( clock speeds I dont care about but it just gives u a general idea ) but the real world difference is A64 is more smoother than XP . I wouldnt pay much attention to Aquamark. To get the most out of your mobo , you do have to tweak the other ram timings than just the normal three. If you want I can post a pic of my A64 Tweaker settings with ram at 300 mhz ( TCCD same as yours ) . Google A64 and play with the timings , that should give u a nice boost in Sandra Scores and Super PI benchies as well as 3dMark2k1 .

was also finking dual vs single channel Ram but on Ath XP pcs (mine ne way) this barley affects the performance; did you change your ram timings or maybe you r usin more onboard devices? did u prev have ur vid card oc'ed and 4get to oc it again

Well I did the simple suggestion of re-installing Win XP and boy did it make a hell of a difference.

This is the scores with the standard 2.2GHz for the 3200+ 754!!

Aquamark

I'll do some more if anyones interested, but now to some seriously fast gaming!!

Cheers as usual to ImageShack for thier lovely free hosting

Thanks Frag!!! :worship: :worship: :wavey:

Dual channel ram setups only increase performance by 5%, i'm having a hard time believe that's where his major performance loss is coming from.

Do what Nick advised and slipstream sp2, it saves so much time.

No prob dawg :) Always suspect Windows when performance decreases after an UPGRADE, lol.

Glad it's working good for you now!

I'll be formatting mine again once my new parts come in for the same reason and because I have to, lol... Damn RAID 0 on a new chipset, bleh.

Yeah damn them at the big blue! I'm even a good boy owning a copy of XP pro and keep having to ring up!

Never mind - love the speed increase! :D

Yeah I hafta call those bastards every time i do a major upgrade to verify my license....

Luckily my dad still has his ties with MS so his buds still ship him a copy of all of the new software when it hits the MS employee store.

Man do I wish that'd happen to me!! You gonna get Longhorn when its nice and stable (well as stable as can be)?

Another thing - NO I don't want to take part in a damn survey about how my activation went! This is the 5th time I've had to call in 2 months

Still - its all worth it now! :o

Well we'll get a copy of another copy of Longhorn when it's finally ready for retail shelves... I have some early ass build that I installed on my laptop about 2 months ago and used it for about 6 minutes before formatting and going back to XP. I couldn't get any of my drivers to work, none of my games would play, it was always rebooting on me. Total steaming pile of shit.

Yeah that's why I didn't get the free beta version of it when it was released. I'll wait till they actually sort their shit out and then get it! Oh and when they actually release some games/apps that are written in 64bit encoding. :p
