Alternative Project: Programming

Wasn't quite sure where to put this, so...

Anyways, at my school for social studies we have to do a family history project. However, since there are a number of people with older siblings who have already done a good job on their own, there is also an alternative project. It can be either a research paper or something a bit more creative. Now, I wanted to do something that had to deal with computers, so my teacher said an option was to create a program that would help the Social Studies department. Now, I'm not a very creative person, so I have no idea what I could do. So far my teacher has suggested making something similar to BlackBoard where teachers are able to post up assignments, news, etc (I think). I was just wondering whether any of you have ideas for something I could do. For this, I will be using Visual Basic 6.0 as it is the simplest of the languages I have available to me (I have Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0).

Thanks in advance :)

hmm i would stay clear of any form of networked application, could cause a lot more trouble than its worth dont you think? What about as part of your study create a questionnaire to give to all the students and teachers in the department (sociological students love questionnaires ;)) and bulk out your assignment considerably

What your teacher is asking for is far too difficult for one student given the time frame and complexity of what has been asked. BlackBoard is great software, and also very advanced. It took many programmers and a good collaborative effort to create it. I say just do the normal assignment TBH, trying to program something that benefits the entire department is just too much time and effort for one lousy project.

Yep, way to hard imo for a school project, especially considering the repercussions if someone hacked it.
