Ali's Rig :D

After owned single core A64's for the last 3 years or so I decided to have a go with the new fangled quad core stuff..

I somehow found money for:

Q6600 GO CPU

Abit IP35 Pro

Corsair XMS2 Pc6400

Scythe Mugen

SATA DVD Drive (which I can't yet use :( )

Scythe Kama Bay (again can't yet use)

Just like a kid at christmas I chucked the wrapping off everything before I knew it my student penthouse suite was full of every packaging ever..

The intel heatsink mount is pretty good IMO and feels more secure and fits easier than my old 939. Get Sharkoon fan straight on.

Severe lack of clearance there..

Old system about to be torn apart. I'm keeping all the drives due to lack of funds, the faithful Hiper PSU, Sharkoon case fans and of course the Antec case.

Fairwell 939 :worship: :worship:

Case after a half arsed hoover and wipe combination attack.

In it drops without too much fuss.

Then comes the fuss. I realise my new SATA DVD drive needs a SATA power dongle. Sadly the ones for my PSU are at home.. so I have to push all the cables about to get the dvd drive to work to install windows. However my usb keyboard didn't want to work anywhere past the BIOS. I had to hunt my flat for anyone with a ps2 keyboard but luckily got my hands on one.

Alive and successfully spinning :) Mr Smiths old 7900 GTO still going strong. And getting in the way of cables. My half assed cleaning job is pretty evident..

Pretty handy sticker :)

First 3d marks run with everything at stock.

Well so there it is. I'm pretty happy with the change from a single core, the computer just feels so much sharper. Starts up so much faster, games load faster, brilliant.

I will have a fair punt at overclocking it and some point :) And I'll be looking to get hold of an 8800 gt and Vista around christmas. Until then I've still got to complete Doom 3.

Before I forget, I'd like to big up bleach. Its an awesome AS5 remover. And color remover from my shorts.

Big thanks for all the guys who helped with the spec in my other thread

BUMPED

January.. tuesday. New case time:

Got my new case delivered today, had to lug it up to room. Then I had to tidy up to have any room to do anything, but... here we are:

Bit of a task hiding all of the numerous cables from the psu round the back, but managed to keep it neat enough.

Hard disk area, kept the front LED fan as I don't have enough here with me. Got a couple more 1000rpm Sharkoons to stick on the front then one on the side sometime soon.

The insides.. Not sure if it's the best orientation for the cpu cooler. To be honest it doesn't need the fan anymore, I didn't notice the fan wasn't plugged in til I checked the speeds.. The Xilence red wing fans are ace, nice, cheap and quiet :) Need to braid a couple of the fan cables when I'm home.

Note last years Family Guy calender..

And one more for luck. Also proof of my tidying on the left :)

That should be my lot on the hardware front for now. I hope.. need to sort out the memory sinks on the graphics card, got some thermal tape coming this week for that.

Happy with the OC I've got on the cpu, 3.2 with stock voltage :)

Just a quick 3d marks run with the temps:

January.. 23rd.. Should be revising.. really should be revising, but anyway..

Didn't really like the funny looing wavy plastic grills on the case at the top and front. I set about hacking them off the other night, would have loved to do it with proper tools but a kitchen knife did the job.

Probably need to get sand paper type stuff to smooth off the stubs that it left but I'm happy with the results. More air seems to be coming out of the top now :)

Might end up painting the insides of the case, as you can see a bit of grey poking through around the front.

Swapped over the psu fan, pretty undecided right now on it. It doesn't move as much air as old fan used to, I'm pretty sure the psu doesn't ever ramp up its fan speed as its never under a decent amount of load. So I may drill a hole in the psu casing somewhere and route the fan cable through and stick it onto one of the motherboard jumpers and run it at 12 or 7 volts whichever works best.

Whole system is very quiet now and I'm getting good temps. Very happy now with it allround.

Next on the list is to sort the cable routing, by chopping some of the motherboard tray apart, a bit like prosser13 has done here: Holes

I know the case is made of steel, so what kind of tool is best for chopping it up?

Got a jigsaw and drills and angle grinder at home if it comes to that..

Cheers!

Thanks a lot for the response guys :) I'm very happy with how it performs, I'm pretty startled with how much difference there is over a single core system, which would struggle to run the AVG virus scan that it insists on doing daily, browse online and play music. I'm even downloading NFS as well right now with no performance drop :)

This weekend I've been home this weekend to pick up sata power cables, fittings and miscellaneous cd's. I can finally get a working DVD drive, which will be nice.

I have thought become a little frustrated with my case and the Scythe Kama bay..

It just annoyingly sits in the bay a little skewed.. which is the problem with the slidy rails in the case.

Anyway.. I'm considering getting and antec 900 or similar case after Christmas and looking to replace the blue led fans with the white sharkoon's I have right now which I think would look pretty good.

In all right now I'm very pleased, and poor :)

It's lidl's for supplies this week i think..

Indeed !

H8 to be another1 to bag @ u, but the room is a disgrace :p (don`t look in my pc room >.<) lol

Seems like there`s quite a family of Q6600 owners on OC3D atm :)

Enjoy the jump from single core AMD !

lol @ the toothbrush

sweet build :)

Hey great rig there - yup an ANtec 900 would be a great choice as long as you get dust filters put in to it lol

Cheers for all the comments guys :)

It's been a while since I got round to updating this.. Since starting the build I've got some new bits :D

Here we have todays delivery..

A while back I got a 500gig SATA hard drive. This fine rainy day I've got a shiny new graphics card and Zippy 600 watt power supply (50quid from Specialtech :)), which looks excellent and is much quieter and cooler than my previous hiper psu.. and the dreaded vista..

Struck me straight away how tiny the cooler is on the GT. It's pretty ineffective too.. I've got it running at 60%, it's idling at.. 46 degrees right now. Much rather have the GTO's cooler on it..

Throwing it all together. It actually looks a little neater with the non-modular psu. Soon I'll be taking out the IDE hard disk, which rather gets in the way and getting a cheap small SATA replacement..

Just installed Crysis and remarkably runs at very high (DX10) in a window.. frame rate is by no means great but it looks awesome :)

I'm going to run some 3d marks later and see what we get..

New case after christmas.. I just can't stop spending money! Student loan has gone a long way though :D

Cheers!

Just messing about with graphics card (ooh err..) and managed to overclock it to the more expensive EVGA KO speed :)

Think I've upped the 3d marks score by at least 750 compared to the un'OCed card. Haven't got an OC on the cpu but will be seeing about that soon. Waiting on a pair of (el cheapo £1) 60mm fans to come to go on the side of the case in the little grill over the graphics card.

Not sure whether to have them sucking air in or out though, to be honest I have no idea whether they will be of any use or not.. See what happens when they come :)

Wow fair doos man, nice lil build there!

You didn't even try out the dual core - just straight onto quad core :p

Dude nice set up. Cant wait for the pennies to be rolling in over xmas...seeing your rig makes me want to throw mine away and start again. :D

Cheers guys :)

Little of an update here.. Went for an Arctic Cooling Accelero S1 to replace the pretty crappy stock heatsink.

Here they are side by side..

Shame there's so much gunk on the stock heatsink as the finish on the copper isn't too bad.

Here it is after cleaning the junk off the card and sticking on the ram coolers, the blue one's are Zalman ones I picked up with the cooler. The AC one's (silver) are really terribly unsticky which is disapointing.

I had to take the cooler off a couple of times after fitting it and putting it in the case due to the unsticking of the AC ram coolers. But after the third try it was looking something like this..

In all I'm pretty happy with the cooler. The only thing I might change is getting the Turbo Module thing, which could lower temps a little, but as it is it's an awesome improvement on the stock cooler. Right now I'm just experimenting with a little OC, at stock the temps max out at 49 degrees load with ATI tool. Considering it's silent I'm very happy :)

EDIT: With an OC to 700 on the core and 950 on the memory it's leveling out at 51/52 degrees. The fan beneath the card is a 1000rpm Sharkoon that I used to have under the old cooler. 15 degrees cooler and about 1 million times quieter :)
