Alcohol question

Heya guys!

Off topic thread from me here. I had a question for all you professional alcoholics out there :)

So I'm 18 years old and since I live in the Netherlands I've been legally drinking alcohol since 16. Never a problem, I drink responsibly and rarely ever get drunk. I actually handle my alcohol quite well.... usually.

Sometimes when I take the first sip of a beer I suddenly feel sick. Not to my stomach or anything, I just get this nasty feeling in my throat (you know that feeling you get seconds before throwing up). Haven't thrown up because of it so far but I still think it's weird.

Other times I can drink half a bottle of vodka, or 10 beers over an entire night and literally feel nothing. Not even slightly drunk or anything either (and no it's not 'not feeling anything because of being passed out' :p).

I gave it a quick Google search and all that came up was people appearing allergic to alcohol because they felt sick in their stumach after one drink. I very much doubt this is what I have because:
1 - I feel it instantly, and not in my stomach.
2 - I only rarely have it.

Would still like to know why this could be and if anything can be done against it. Anyone has an idea? :)

Take care,

It might be if you're drinking on a empty stomach. The same thing happens to me when I drink when I've not eaten.

It could be to do with what you eat before you drink, or your livers way of saying save me

Yeah, I thought that too but really... One sip? That would suck cause I eat very little (and I mean veeeerry little). :(

James suggested it might be cause the beer isn't cold. I thought it was interesting and I've never really paid attention to that. Thoughts? :)

Edit; Did a bit more of 'Googling' and it's deffo not alcohol intolerance as I don't get any of those symptoms, so that's good I guess!

Beer is a loose term......

It varies from place to place on the meaning......

Are we talking Lager, Bitter or Ale (Ale is the pull pump handle)

Having worked in the pub industry for 7 years prior to becoming a dad I have quite a bit of knowledge of how the 'lines' work.....

Does this happen in the one certain pub/place or does it not matter where you are?
It could be a number of factors, what you've eaten prior, taste buds changing, all the way down to the pub and its 'Cleaning of the lines'. If you find that the drink has an off taste it could be that the lines either need cleaning or you have had one of the first poured pints from a freshly cleaned line, basically your drink could have traces of line cleaner in it.....aka not nice

Whenever I went out the first few lagers I had, I had a dash of lemonade, basically breaks you in nicely to a decent drinking session

Slight alcohol intolerance? I believe it's more common than people think.

But then why doesn't it always happen and is my issue not in the list of symptoms?

It's usually from the tap. Never had it with bottled beer now that you mention it.

It's happened in 2 places so far. Both of which I've been to multiple times before (and after) and haven't had it again. The third time was from beer in a can but honestly that was just some funky weird cheapo brand that someone brought from the supermarket

One of those two places is a rather big café (+ restaurant) where a *lot* of people come so I'm assuming they do okay with their cleaning. Must admit that the other one is a bar where not many people would enter (punk & metal music, mainly) but if I'm the only one there that has an issue with it I'm assuming it's just me.

Doesn't really taste 'off' in either cases.

I may try eating a bit more before going out as well as trying the lemonade thing and seeing if I get it with cold beer too. Thanks mate!

i drink very rarely but i get that as well, it usually has something to do with my mood. if i'm in a bad mood i won't have a sip of alcohol, just makes me feel horrible.
can't really give you anymore magic science on this, i drink alcohol like twice a year.

That's interesting. With feeling horrible, do you mean mentally (as in depressed) or physically ill?

Sometimes I feel something like that during first two or three drinks but then it kinda disappears.

physically, pretty much the same symptoms you described. i also get the same when i drink apple juice right after getting up at like 6 am, it's weird.

Hmm...
I have trouble even finishing one drink in such a case though, as I'm afraid that I'll be really sick. Can't say I enjoy drinking either with that in the back of my head :p

My friend has a intolerance to the hops similar symptoms, try drinking spirits instead.

That's interesting. Is there any way you could check if you're intolerant/allergic to certain ingedrients of beer? Something like a blood test maybe...

Maybe it's some ingredient that is in both drinks (although I wouldn't know what that could be lmfao)? Alcohol doesn't usually affect my mood very much though, if at all.

I use to get that feeling if the pumps hadn't been cleaned out properly, but that was along time ago haven't drunk alcohol for nearly 15 years a pint would get me pissed now :)

So I was at Warped Tour Europe yesterday and we decided to have some beer. I hadn't eaten yet that day (was around 4 pm I think) so I bought a pizza first, we split that with 3 people and then went for beer.

Beer was from the tap and cold, it was good and I didn't feel anything close to sick! So seems like the problem was either eating or it not being cold. I'm going to assume it's eating as it was only recently when I realised how little I eat again these days.

Oh, and for those wondering; Warped was awesome. Proper sore now but it was so worth it watching Parkway Drive do a live show :D

Thats because alcohol is bad, eat clean, look lean!

Haha I'm not to sure though, it does sound like some allergy type thing.

I get that same feeling everytime I drink larger, it doesn't matter whether I eat or not before or how much or little.

I do still drink it though, but only on the odd occassion now and when I go out on a night out with work I stick to Aftershock, Absinthe, Sambuca and a few others, and that way I do get drunk but I don't feel sick.
