Afterburner temp sensor reliability

My 6870 is like a wailing banshee when the fan is on auto and the temps were nodding toward 80 degrees. I changed the TIM yesterday and have reduced the to fan 40% which is near silent. Ive been playing BF3 for hours and have used afterburner osd to keep an eye on things it says the temp is 70-75 degrees which im happy with. Im just wondering how accurate it is and if I can take as gospel, or should I take it with a pinch of salt ???

I'd say it is quite accurate, but it definitely will take quite a bit of resources than any other of methods to record such. I personally while still using Afterburner at some times trying to view frame rates and other statistics of percentage of use, I generally use Hardware Monitor in the background of a gaming session to see maximum temperatures and whatnot. But I mean peaking at 80 degrees does seem as if your running either a very hot card or a decent overclock, which then I just advise maybe looking into a aftermarket cooler or fitting a water block as I see you have an adequate casing.
