Hi there folks, new around here and looking for some advice. Ive just purchased a bundle from Aria (Intel i5 2500K Processor - Overclocked to 4.60GHz - Blue LED Quiet Heatpipe Cooler - MSI Z68A-GD55-G3 - 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM ) also purchased Coolermaster CM 690 II Lite Midi Case PCGH White Special Edition. i am now looking to get a graphics card to go along with this but it will only be for around 4 -5 months until i build a rig just for gaming.

i was thinking about a GTX 580 or the ATI 7950 or the 70.

To give you a bit more info when i get round to building a rig for gaming only i intend to use 3 screens, thinking of going for the I7 3930 along with the Rampage IV motherboard, not 100% sure what else to get but still deciding.

what i want your help with is what would be best to go with, what gives me best value for money?

oh one other thing what power supply do u suggest for the first system am building bearing in mind it will have to be suitable for running the new card for the time being.

thanks.

A hd7950 outperforms gtx580.Clocks higher, need only half wattage. The gigabyte hd7950 trifan cooler or the sapphire solution are quiet and fairly cool.

Price is the same.

Lol at people recommending the 580 over the 7950

Please take off your Nvidia green tinted goggles, the 7950 is the better card, especially given the fact it overclocks to 7970 performance with ease.

Oh, and S_I_N, you need to change your sig to "Nvidia #2 and proving it," if the 6xx comes out back on top, fair enough change it back to "Nvidia #1" but at the moment they are #2 and proving it.

in the oranges to apples comparison your right. But comparing new tech to old tech Nvidia is still king. Of the old tech if (and i doubt it) AMD still rules after Nvidia unleashes its new tech offering I may change my sig. But I have always favored comparing apples to apples and so on.

I think it's really what you want from the whole package. At this moment, the 7950 seems like the winner between price and performance, but the nVidia 5 series cards are still very solid.

there not proving it in the dual GPU market thats for sure. the 590 is still the most epic fail card to be released.

Or to "Nvidia #1 but cba to prove it" xD

My vote is for the 7950 as your planning to go 3 screens and its around the same price as a 580. If you can get a 2nd hand 580 for cheap on ebay or somewhere then that that isnt to bad of a choice either but not for new costs imo.

Its not realy oranges and apples now is it

Nvidia did a double release to get a BIT of a performance and to FIX there cards then ati did a double release and a got larger performance increase, Just looking at release dates you can see why you cant just go BUT BUT ITS OLD.

if you want the extra perks of CUDA and PhysX then go for nVidia.

if you do not need them, get a beefy 7xxx amd gpu instead

From what I have found is AMD make some really good hardware but they seem to let themselves down with their driver packages. I have heard alot of people complaining about the 7 series due to driver limitations and selling the cards and going back to Nvidia. If it were me buying I would probably say get a 570/80 or if you can wait the new 6 series.

See, this is the problem with fanboyisim, instead of looking at a one product and comparing it to another it becomes about peoples attachment to a name and them wanting their favorite brand to be the best, ignoring all the facts about which is the better product.

The 7950 is better than the 580 and so is the 7970. Very few games use Physx and it's not exactly something spectacular, it's just a bit of extra effects on explosions and ruble. As for Cuda, unless you do a lot of work with apps that can be sped up using Cuda, then Cuda is also pretty pointless.

So to sum it up, the 7950 and the 7970 are better than the 580, unless you do something where Cuda is needed then it's pointless, Physx isn't something to really sway your decision and buy an inferior card for just so you can get slightly looking better explosions and a few other minor effects in games that very few games even have anyway. If you want to do some F@H then a Nvidia card is better than an AMD one, F@H is not the main intention of getting a GPU though, the main intention is gaming. So, sorry, but gaming performance should be prioritized over F@H.

Looking at it as product A vs product B, the 7950/7970 is the better product than the 580. Forget who makes the card and what name is on it, look at the actual performance and what each card offers, also taking into account price to performance.

I wouldn't classify myself as a fanboy I had an Nvidia gtx 260 and was not happy with it, I thought it was the crappiest card on the market and bought an ATI HD 5850 it was a great card but towards the end I had driver problems so I changed back to Nvidia to a gtx 460 and everything went well, I have a gtx 580 waiting to go into my new rig as I feel they are the better product ATM as they seem to work better with the current crop of games but if AMD perform better then by all means buy one.

That wasn't directed at you I was just speaking in general but the 580 being better than the 7950 or the 7970 or being the better product isn't true at all and whoever told you it is was are lying. The driver support for crossfire isn't fully sorted yet but the performance is still better than a 580.

Also, just as many people have problems with Nvidia drivers than they do AMD ones and just as many people have gone from Nvidia to AMD and vice versa because of it.
