The best thing to do with monitors and TVs is to go to shops and see which brands' screens you like best (sharpness, colour, contrast). With most you can play around with the settings in the store.
I'd say get something from Samsung, Philiips, Sony or LG.
Personally not a fan of LG TVs as they tend to look really plastic-y.
Some higher end Philips TVs will have ambilight, which is a lighting system behind the TV that will adapt to the colours on the screen and display them on the wall behind your TV. Some people call it a gimmick, but I've honestly experienced that for me, personally, it was comfortable on the eyes.
I also like Samsung TVs. A lot of them come with WiFi and for most smartphones there are remote apps for Samsung TVs. It's not really necessary for watching TV, but I find it a nice bonus.
One thing to keep in mind: If you're using it in a dark room, a glossy screen will look nice, but using it in a lit-up room with for instance lots of windows, the reflections are going to drive you nuts so in that case go with a matte screen.
Same for plasma TVs. They're not as common anymore but they offer great colours and contrast when placed in darker rooms. If you want a good all-rounder then definitely go LED.
