Advice on RX 480

Needing a new GPU, I have a budget of £250 and I was looking at the RX 480 vs 1060 and from what I can gather from YouTube and forums: everyone is saying go with the 480 because AMD has closed the gap in DX11 performance in terms of drivers, in addition to having Vulcan and DX 12 support because possibly the newer games will implement it and finally AMD cards age better with time due to driver support (fine wine).

Can you give me some advice on what to choose and why. Also what do you think of getting a 980 of ebay instead of the RX480?

Well the 480 and 1060 are faster than a 980. Especially since the 980 isn't getting priority optimizations like the other two are. Both consumes less power, and have more memory.

For the 480 I would aim for the XFX line are amongst the best cards. The GB or MSI cards are good as well. Although my MSI card is crap, but I think it's probably because its a dud.

I heard the XFX line is the best coming from jaystwocents. Do you are saying go with the 480? Is it better than the other cards in my budget and is arguments like fine wine true because I'll be keeping this card for a few years meaning I want the card that's going to give me the most fps 2 years down the line

Hard to say its the best without testing a load of others........

If you're thinking of long term use, ie the 2 years that you mentioned, I would say go for either of the newer cards (480 or 1060). Not the 980.

I don't think the Sapphire was the best performer. From what I have seen that would be the XFX. Loads of the guys on OCUK have tested them and it came out the best for cooling and so on. Not the best for looks IMO (that goes to the Sapphire) but yeah easily the quietest.

Bit of a PITA having to swap the fans to swap the LED colour but if you got it with white LEDs I guess you could just leave it.

As for the two year thing? which card has the most VRAM? because that's what will scupper you. 480 all the way for me. They're nearly as fast as a Fury when overclocked and have double the VRAM.

So it seems that the general opinion is go with the 480. The other question is which one. Like mentioned above the XFX GTR is apparently really good. I have a £250 budget so I can buy the higher end 480's but like someone mentioned the sapphire is too loud. What about one's like the MSI and devils version. I also do agree with you tom that it is hard to give an accurate view but it's just more of a general idea.

Personally I would go with the AMD, they tend to get better as they get older as the drivers always improve whilst nvidia adopt a planned obsolescence, the info I have been looking at over the past months suggest the 480 is a better card.

At launch the devil had some bios issues and thus was quite loud and hot. It also didn't overclock very well.

If you like red then the MSI would be fine I suppose, just avoid anything Gigabyte.

OCUK have a decent deal on the RS version of the XFX.

Wasnt issues. They did that on purpose because it was hotter than they thought and the cooler wasnt good enough sadly. Those bios issues are what they had to do to get it cool enough and quiet

On the new drivers it's like 90% win to AMD overall. In DX12 I think there was like one game where the 1060 came out ahead.

For £229 the XFX really is the best card for the money. Also let's face it DX12 is pretty poor at the moment. I am sure as it matures and gets better so will the AMD card due to Async.

Shame. I love the Devil card for its looks. It also looked like the most solid and well made card for your money too. Very big imposing card with a cooler to match. TBH? if I wasn't into overclocking and what not I would probably buy the Devil.

Errrrrm. No. The last few have been very thin and tinny. The only daft heavy one was the dual core card.

Personally I have never owned an XFX card so I am unable to comment on them however I have owned Sapphire cards and none of them have let me down. I still have 2 of them a R9 290X in my rig and a HD7770 in my partners rig and they are still going strong.

Stay away from Powercolor and Asus. GB, XFX, MSI should be the only options tbh. Asus would be good but there coolers to me have never been that quite and they don't fully cool everything like VRMs

Personally if I could get on now, XFX GTR. I would switch out my MSI for it. No hesitation

Right so stay away from the powercolor GPU (my previous card was a powercolor 6970 so its surprising to me they have degraded their quality from what Tom is saying). Are there any other GPU's to stay away from like NeverBackDown was telling me stay away from the Asus ones too?

I do think the XFX GTR 480 is probably the best option due to what JaysTwoCents and what some of you peeps are saying (cooling, overclocking and power draw)... I can pick up that GPU today for £245 which is in my budget.

Just to give you guys an idea I definitely plan to at least try and overclock the card to its maximum potential to squeeze the most fps but I am not fond of having a vacuum in my PC too ;) which is why I will most likely stay away from the sapphire card which is a shame because it sounds like a great overclocker! Basically I want the best of both worlds if that's possible.

I will be buying a 480 GPU within the next coming week as my PC is dead without a graphics card and I really want to get back up and running. What do you guys think of my decision with choosing the XFX GTR and what are the best alternatives possibly from MSI, GB etc? I want to make the best informed decision before buying it so so all of your guys help is appreciated, even if it is just saying stay away from a brand due to bad experience.

If you are overclocking then avoid the Powercolor Devil. It really is pants.

I think the GTR is probably the best performing card there is when it comes to 480s. Sure others may look better but the cooling is excellent.

The Gigabyte was awful and the MSI is probably OK but too samey to me with all of their other cards. Plus I think the XFX looks better than the MSI.
