I am going to upgrade to a Z97 devils Canyon, below s what I have in my wishlist, if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions they would be welcomed.

Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO

Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz 8MB S1150 'Devils Canyon' Processor

Corsair 16GB (2 x 8GB) Vengeance Pro 2400MHz DDR3 DIMM 240pin C11 Red

Corsair 860W AX860 80PLUS Platinum High Performance PSU

I am going to keep the following gear that I already have

OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS

Asus ROG GTX 580 MATRIX

Coolermaster COSMOS S case

Corsair H100

Asus Xonar STX

I should add that I will be over clocking it

Great cpu, ram, mobo... But what is with the gtx 580? Will you not be gaming? I know you already had it, but do you plan an upgrade.

Yes I will be gaming, I thought the GTX was fine. Any game I have played has been on max settings and it could handle it with good fps, Wolfenstein New Order being the most recent. Its also overclocked to 970mhz. I will check a few GPU benchmarks to see performance difference with a more modern GPU.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yes, it id fine, but it does bot really compare to the rest of your rig, which is really high end.

Yes I can see your point, it is a 2/3 year old card, I am just finding it hard to justify an additional ~£300 on a graphics card that will not really make much of a difference.

Even if I got a GTX 770 its not really going to give me a massive performance boost. Would it not be better to keep the 580 until such times as dx12 appears or the card just isn't powerful enough to produce the fps I expect?

Its an interesting question, I wish I had it all in front of me so I could run 3D Mark and see how much of a difference there is.

I would even go as far as getting a 780 if I firmly believed it would make a significant performance difference.

You could always try selling your 580 while it's not too old and get a 780 for now (I've got a 780 and it hasn't struggled to keep me well over 60 fps) The 880 looks like it'll be great however unless you want to go with 4K it looks like it could be massive overkill for now :)

A 780 is actually twice the performance of a 580 in most cases ;)

Benchmark here for you :) - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/767?vs=827

Well according to the latest leaks the 800 series wont be with us until November.

Was just mentioning it as you talked a little about the 880 being massive overkill :)

Ahh ok :)

Yeah, I think it will, what with rumours of 8GB vRAM, a pretty powerful maxwel chip.

I would still happily recommend a 780, I still think (hope ;) ) mine will last a few years

I usually upgrade once per year, If it's less than 15% performance gain between generations then I usually skip and wait for the generation afterwards

Liar! We all know you constantly get the upgrade itch:p

I lost track of how many cards you changed in the past 6 months lol

WOW! That's a nice bunch of GPUs, your wallet must be crying :p

I went 760 then 780 (After the 760 went for 3 RMA's!)

Not really, The first 780 I gave to a family member, The 290X I got a refund on and put a little extra towards a 780 Ti so I didn't fork out much in the end :)
