A64 & Mach II

..results to follow as soon as I get my A64 cpukit I got my new stuff today. MSI Neo Socket 754 mobo and A64 3200+. Looks to be a nice setup. I've fired it up on air just to test things, the first thing that strikes me is the layout of the board - it's excellent. Really well thought out. The USB headers are located at the bottom of the pcb - which is a good start - nothing worse than chunky USB wires getting in the way of PCI cards. It's a loaded mobo too - plenty of options in the bios (apart from AGP lock ) - three IDE ports, nicely located - four sata points, 6 USB ports and even an on-board firewire port. Very quiet too when I first booted, certainly quieter than the stock Intel heatsink. It's not my first experience with AMD but its cetainly a massive improvement over times of old. I'm looking forward to overclocking. I'm going to install a basic XP image, get the drivers installed and benchmark.

Djay got his Mach II yesterday and he is now running his Mobile XP @ 2.8ghz. Very impressive indeed. I get my mobile chip tomorrow.

You went for the best board IMO. It'd be interesting to see what happens. I'm running the same but on the AMD Retail stock cooler.

Best features and really well laid out.

Hehehe yeh i definitely posted it phil, will be with you tomorrow. Mach 2 is fantastic mate. The mobile XP is really taking a caning, however my case temperatures are amazingly high, need to get some northbridge cooling badly. Although my 9800pro is red hot to touch just idling in windows.

OH HOW time flies. With people still gasping over A64 3400+ reviews, and Intel about to introduce the 3.4GHz models, some Prescott, some not, are we ready for the next round from AMD?

Ready or not, they are coming at the end of March. Birds singing in our ears have told us that when the S939 boards are launched in about two months, they will be accompanied by A64 3700+ chips. If AMD keeps to the schedule, they will beat their own roadmaps, even if it is only by a day or two.

The upcoming months will bring us the 3700+ in not only S939 guise, but also in S754 form. All those people who bought an Athlon64 board should have little to fear, the 3700 will be a very viable upgrade for you, and the 4000+ which follows should fit in your board also. Overall, AMD is not going to orphan you any time soon. The current plans show a 3700 in Q2, and a 4000 in Q3, with an as yet unrated one to follow in Q4. The corresponding Intel roadmaps show only a 3.8GHz in Q3 and a >3.8GHz in Q4. Time to start scaling the Prescott quickly boys, or you may be behind all year. µ

That is a fairly impressive overclock from what I have been reading. Do you find the AGP lock is the main cause for concern when it comes to this sort of cooling & overclocking? I imagine you'll hit the AGP limit way before the limit of the chip, in which case I hope they release socket 754 nf250's with a lock. Either way, I'm happy to have gone AMD after all this time and I look forward to getting my FX53.

Haven't really had a problem with the AGP lock nor the PCI lock on me Shuttle AN50R... just made sure I manually adjusted them like wiv some P4 boards... so that the board doesn't auto adjust them
