A question about sponsorship

Lots of builds appear to be sponsored on here. They have a big logo at the top of their log and then a nice message saying thank you to some named individual underneath. Are these people being given free components for their builds by these companies and if so, how do you go about being sponsored by a company? I would presume you send their customer support departments a pleasant email with details of your plans and a link to your thread and hope they can offer something up. Would I be about right?
thanks in advance.

I'd imagine it would be decided by your past experience. In other words, if you do an epic build with lots of time and effort put into it then you'll get noticed. I wouldn't think it's easy.

Basically you either need to have been good before or have an epic idea.

Too many people try and blag stuff and then do very little with it, I get asked on here and youtube DAILY will I give people my stuff.

The vendors actually hate it because in 90% of cases they would have got more from it with a competition or something.

Thanks for the swift reply. I somehow doubt I would be much use to any of those companies so I wont bother them. I think I'll work for another 25 weeks or so so I can afford do my next set of upgrades instead:'(

I recently read a thread about getting a sponsorship. The main concern of the company is business, which means getting enough purchases from people who have seen their components used in an awesome way, so that it pays for giving out the components in the first place.

They're not easy to get, so they don't just give stuff away to every Tom, Dick, and Harry that asks. You'd need a portfolio of original, and awesome build logs to get sponsorship, so to start off with you'll have to shell out for the parts yourself, and make sure you do something good enough with them that would stick in people's minds, or make them think they'd thought of it first.
