I would instead use four GTX 780Ti cards - F@H loves the extra CUDA cores, and that mobo can hold four of them.

Remind your readers as well Tom - just those Xeons alone will set you back a sweet $2700... EACH!!!

2 x 12-core Xeons + 4 x 2880 CUDA cores, done right, would be pushing close to 800,000 PPD - an insane amount of folding performance for a single box.
 
Ive got a small SSD to try out Linux - but I have litterally NO fooking idea with that!

Have you thought about which distro you're going to try? There are some which are
pretty newb-friendly these days (Ubuntu, Mint come to mind, I'm sure there are others).
If you keep a bit of an open mind about some things being done a bit differently it shouldn't
be too difficult as long as you're not compiling your OS from scratch. Otherwise don't
hesitate to ask, there should be enough Linux folk around here to help out.

As a side note: If you intend to fold on those GPUs I'm not sure it'll work on Linux. Lack
of GPU folding support is one of my two big gripes with F@H's project management (not
with the project itself and its goals, just with management) and along with that other reason
prompted me to switch to BOINC.

From time to time somebody seems to be able to get GPU folding to work on Linux, but
in general my experiences with those hacks have been unsatisfying (i.e. they didn't work
for the most part, and they certainly didn't work reliably).

If that's changed by now big hurray from me though.

CPU folding always worked flawlessly though, so if that's the idea then I can defo
recommend Linux.

I'm not much on Linux, but with the V7 client I believe Linux GPU folding is supported. So it might have more to do with driver availability. IIRC Nivida will work but no support for AMD ATM.

4X 780ti's should net at least 600K PPD and and more than likey do closer to 750-800K PPD

With modern UEFI BIOS and Unetbootin for a Linux install the best way I have found is not to change the boot order. Set it up to boot from the SSD as if the OS was already installed. With the USB drive in, mash the boot loader F key, (I have one that uses F7 and another that uses F12). Choose the non-UEFI USB from the list of available drives and it should be easy from there.

I have an Ultrabook running Ubuntu and it boots from cold in under 5 seconds. When it was running Manjaro it was even faster. Shut down was very fast with Manjaro too, less than a second!

IIRC, the client itself does indeed support GPU folding in Linux, but there are no work units
available for that setup, so even though it works in theory you can't do any actual work. It
just sits idle for all eternity, neither producing error messages nor actual results. At least
that's how I remember things from my last attempt at this.
 
@Pendragon - Thanks for that, I shall try that for my next install, I searched high & low but couldn't find an answer or get it to work...

EDIT: Not sure how much of a difference an SSD would make in comparison to a HDD for an SMP folding rig?

Once I tried World Community Grid's F@H on a SUN server with a dualcore Opteron in the past but I can't see any pros. So I turn it back to a Win Server 2003 R2:)
 
Probably the most powerful build I've ever seen, and it's a folding rig, wow :D
I've been meaning to get into it while I'm still living in student housing with bills included, maybe soon :)
 
As I said in another thread - you may have to give up a core per GPU?? That's if you can get the cards working under Linux???
 
The Guv doing another build. This I have to see, especially the power house this is going to be. Will def get good folding points if you can get it all working together well.

It seems like a lot of us are taking advantage of the included electricity in student halls, me included!

However, I think that I'm becoming addicted to folding and keep wanting to make my rig fold faster!

I can't wait to see what scores Tom's monster rig will be pumping out! :D
