980ti or wait for pascal???

I'm building my new rig I've bought everything except the GPU, I don't know whether I should grab a 980ti or wait for pascal to be released if it's coming in April as all the sites I've read predict??????

I'd consider how much you want a 980Ti now and how much you are prepared to lose when/if it's successor comes out.

The cheapest 980Ti on OCUK is £510, it's replacement will be around £600 - £650, and you might get say £300 - £350 for your 2nd hand 980Ti before they fall further. So best case here, you'll have spent £1,110 (980Ti and it's successor), after selling the 980Ti your total spend will be £760... You could always get a used 980Ti now to reduce your loss.

I've read that the full fat replacement for the 980Ti won't be out until much later in the year, November / December ish, which goes by current Nvidia trends, but it's all strategic rumours.

Tbf, I always tell people to just get what they want now cause new things will always be "around the corner" and you'll always be waiting. If the 980 Ti performs well in the games that you currently play, I see no reason not to pick one up.

I look at it like this if you can wait just wait if you can't just get the GTX980Ti now

I was just searching looks like Nvidia has change the naming of the models for Pascal too
The new Pascal will not be coming until June so up to you, Some websites are reporting the power is is not going to be that much less than the 900 series.

The GTX980Ti uses 250 watts
The new Pascal is only using 225 watts, so it's only 25 watts less

Then some websites have reported uses the same amount of wattage.

As i have said don't believe the hype cause IMO looks like Pascal is not going to be this world beater as some people have said.

If it's June then that's a different story I don't think I could wait that long.

My train of thought was why buy this gen if the next gen is only a month away I used my experience with my 780ti to my pair of 970's before I sold them. The performance jump was pretty good plus the extra tech like God lighting ect

If its June then I'm probably gonna grab a 980ti and watercooling that bad boy :)

Remember that we are talking about a product of which there are currently rumours about when it'll be announced.

Grab a 980ti Now and wait to see what happens later in the year (or early next) for full fat Pascal v Polaris

I think I will wait till the first week in April and if it isn't announced then I will grab a 980ti or if it is announced but not much improvement over maxwell then I might be able to get a 980ti a bit cheaper when the hardcore enthusiasts go nuts

Sounds like a plan Steverebo :).

I wouldn't call myself a hardcore enthusiast (some would!) and I won't be shedding my 980Tis until the next iteration of the Ti is announced. Used 980Ti's seem a bit thin on the ground at the moment too.

Yeah I've looked and can't find any really that are reasonably priced. When I buy second hand I like the discount to be worth the lack of warranty I don't like paying £20/£30 less than retail it's just not worth the risk imo

Very true. Any particular 980Ti you have your eye on? Both the MSI Gaming 6G and the Gainward Phoenix GS would suit your build nicely.

Well my new build scheme is black and white so I am eying up the msi armour x2 or gigabyte card but I'm probably just gonna add it to my custom loop so the Asus strix with previous installed ek block looks good. My budget is around £600

This! No matter how long you wait and no matter how careful you are in timing, the second you buy something, sometime newer, shinier, better and maybe even cheaper will be coming out. Just buy what you want/need when you want/need it. The exception would be if you have a firm release date and it's pretty close.

Exactly, plus the fact the 980Ti is a fantastic card. Personally I don't see the need to bother with Pascal just yet when im running two of these babies. The only concern I might see for you is the reference cooler. I can't confirm how optimal they function dissipating the heat as I have watercooled mine from day 1.

Well in my opinion wait for Pascal and I'm not saying this because of the more gain in performance vs money, but more of the extreme issues the 980 Ti series has with coil whine. These cards have some serious issues with their power delivery, some worse and some minor. I'm now on my 6th 980 Ti, and this one started whining when connecting an HDMI cable, like it's an opera singer.

That of course is not to say that Pascal will be better, but there's always hope. But all in all there's a very good chance they'll have less of these issues, as it's better tech and have no need to push itself to a limit like the Maxwell tech had to due to the 28nm limitations.

all cards have coil whine. Its just a matter of how OCD you are with such noise. Some are quiet some are loud. Coil whine would kick in when you start gaming which in most cases you have headphones on, or speakers.

My cards coil whine is noticeable but at the same time negligible because of the audio from the game or music etc. Every card i have had from Nvidia has had coil whine, 680,780,780Ti and 980Ti. I personally think its ludicrous that people were RMA'ing the cards because of that alone.

In some cases it really does need to be RMA'd if it's ear screeching loud like some cards are.
Having said that, none of my AMD cards have ever had coil whine. However during any loading screen(or benchmarks) coil whine would appear until i entered the game or quit the benchmark. That's normal though and not reason to RMA.

Of course all cards have coil whine to a certain extend, typically when in game menus where the FPS will reach 700+ there's no way to get around that, unless you use v-sync or adaptive v-sync. And while gaming there can also be a slight buzz coming from the card, but again this too is fine.

All the cards I had with coil whine were noticeable louder than the game sound, meaning you could hear the whine shift pitch when gaming. And you seriously can't expect people to use headphones to avoid such issues, as even with open-ended headphones it can often still be heard. It becomes much more of an issue when water cooling graphics cards, since you no longer have active fans on that card in most cases, which means you can hear the whine very easily.
