9800GTX Specs - not looking good!

If you look at the top of each page, none of these were done with actual gameplay using FRAPS. They were timedemos. Explanation of what that entails here

Ahh na I know what timedemos are just didn't think to look for the obvious Fraps screen overlay..

Ta though :)

Well I didn't know what they were, so it's good you forced me to look it up :p

Ahh I see... Yeah I think the only reason I originally saw that exact site you linked actually was someone saying that its a very valid argument. Is that the same site that don't do review reviews.. They kinda just give an indication as to what they think of the product?? Might be somewhere else.

yeah, but FRAPS hurts some games in a big way, which can tend to throw the figures off,so maybe thats why they didnt use it?

Timedemos are just pre-built demos that are designed to run well so developers can say 'look how great our game is and look how well it runs'.

They don't represent a real life gaming experience.

Evidence of this is clear with ati's 8.1 to 8.2 driver. In the Crysis timedemo performance rose by about 30%. In real life it was about 1-2%.

To my knowledge FRAPS doesn't hurt games but I don't know for certain, Matt can you shed any light?

Am I the only one who's not massively impressed?

Ok, so when the price settles down it will take over from the GTS and they're obviously going to phase out the 8800GTX.

Maybe the structure will be; 9600, 8800 GToc/GTS, 9800 GTX, GX2.

That'll give different performances at different price points until the 8800's are completely phased out - but I don't want to rush out and get one.

It's ok but it's not a next gen gpu.

I'm keeping my powder dry.

Fraps certainly dosent like the leak of Assassins Creed, or vice versa i can tell you that. Says im getting 18fps solid, yet i know thats not true.

Nobody said they where massively impressed. My thought on the card is give it a chance. People are bashing it all over the place cause its the same chip as the 8800GTS. Nobody is holding a gun to anybodies head with an 8800 card to buy a 9800 card. With ATI not giving much competition Nvidia dosent have a reason to put out a monster card.

Crazy thing is, going on holiday in a matter of weeks/months, and I can`t rule out me getting one if the price is crazy, just on principle. Probably sell the 8800gt for the same money equiv in pounds. Would like to hold out to see if an XXX or Ultras come to light, I`m sure they will.

It`s interesting again.

It shows GTX working well to sli, not being worth doing tri-sli.

Also GX2 working well, but not work using 2.

It also shows that you need to consider your monitor max resolution in these decisions.

The comment on SLI mobos and non SLI boards is a fair one two, you have a pretty good option this time around as to go 790 or stick with P35/45 (38/48).

Another thing to think of, he`s using a QX9650 @ 4.4ghz - which is whole lot of 3dmarks in itself.

i think an sli set-up with gtx's on 790i would be killer :P

I'm contemplating it as an option, but first I want to see the 9800GTX/SLI tested against the 8800GTX/SLI on 790i with the new drivers. I'll probably get whatever is 'king of the dual-card SLI' at high res

Smart thinking. I do believe Kemp has tested the 8800GTX/Ultras in SLI - and have no doubt he`ll be chomping at the bit to test 2 9800GTXs.

Either way, the results of that would be more of a banker for me. I wouldn`t think he`d chuck them in with the likes of a QX9650, but be more realistic with a Q6600 or a Q9450 if he gets one also.

Actually they do its just such a huge CPU bottleneck on 06.

At higher res with AA they destroyed everything.

Just had a butchers at those new benches and 2 X GTX looks like it scales well.. Those on a 790i would rock but dunno about paying that much for a mobo when I'll need a new socket come start of next year.
