90% or 99% Isopropyl Alcohol?

if its for wiping past of a CPU make sure you go for 99% also dont use a cloth thats gonna leave fibres behind, that could be baaad

Yeah I find tissue great - Also add a few dabs on Akasa Citrus CPU cleaner (but only because I 'borrow' it from work!)

Yeah, when I built this system, I used rubbing alcohol that had dies in it and a kitchen paper towel. I wish I hadn't.

I am going to be adding water cooling to this rig soon and I want to clean it better this time. I have a micro fiber cloth and will use that, as well as some 99% if I can find any.

TBH I don't understand the big scare about using 100% Alcohol, I used something called "Witch Hazel" no clue what it was or why it was in my house and can't remember what was in it, but it had a similar effect of rubbing alcohol and I dipped a Qtip lightly in it and it wiped away the thermal paste just fine. The CPU was completely shiny and almost looked new when I was through with the cleaning.

I then added the new stuff and new cooler and on 4.5GHz I hit a max temp of 63c, and it was Cooler Master paste.

The microfibre cloths for glass are best for this, I'd say. They have a rougher side with no fibres on which should be sweet beans.

I have noticed that I have higher temps, especially when using prime95, on this rig. Again, I am using the stock cooler for the Ivy bridge CPU, which accounts for a lot, but I am curious if I did any damage by using the low quality alcohol and kitchen paper towel. If so, I hope that cleaning and applying new TIM will fix that.

At idle I usually run 40-31-39-30 for my four corresponding cores (as measured through cpu-z). I have noticed that the first core (41) always displays in yellow, and others that some times reach as high as 40, are always displayed in green. Why is that?

depends on paste really, if you use something like gold and u change it once every 5 years then 99% might not even be wnough but it will be much better than 90,

i use mx4 and 90 is more than enough to clean it.

ohh you could also jsut use the paint thickener XD

Its the load temps that matter

Under load (2 minutes) I was reaching 90+C! I stopped and am going to test under load once I water cool.

As it is now (stock cooler) I get to the high 60's low 70's when gaming in Crysis 2.

My girlfriend has makeup wipes that have 90% Isoprophyl Alcohol, they're like $2 at the shop. they're quite strong and don't break up at all. they come in a pack of like 400, They work brilliantly don't leave anything behind and are WAAYYY cheaper than just buying the stuff in a bottle.

I think the lot of you is over thinking such a simple task. 90% or 99% either is fine. I use 90% and kitchen roll. Then if you think any fibers are still present wipe with a lint free cloth or blow with a short blast of air. Simples never had any issues with any method I used.

I used the 91% alcohol to clean some glue left over from a sticker that I scraped off of my motorcycle today - it worked just fine. It did leave some residue, but I went over it a few times and I think it's fine.
