My 8600GT (Gigabyte version SilentPipe, no fan) is doing me proud for a wee fella! COD4@1680*1050 with AAx2 and Crysis, same res medium settings DX10 but no AA ... I`m not into FPS much, I go by "feel" but inevitably as games get better and crave to look better too, I`m probably gonna upgrade.

Now, I`ve always gone with Nvidia, in this case it was because at the time they were the first to go DX10, however, I`m reading all sorts of nasties about DX10.1 included in Vistas next DX upgrade (with SP1?) and how Nvidias current flock may not be ... well, I`m sure we`ve all read the same stuff and I note that some of ATIs cards are 10.1 compatible.

I`ve noted that say, the 8800GTs have fairly come down in price and it would be the next natural progression for me, but having a X-Fire capable board I`m wondering whether or not to go for the Radeon x 2 option? If I do that, what would you guys reckon to be a good Radeon combination to better an 8800GT (even an ultra but no way would I pay over £250 for a GPU, I ain`t that good!!)?

Bounce a couple of ideas of this tight-fisted Geordie pls :D

Two 3070's in CF beat out the GT along with the GTX... Most of the time.

Single card solutions are the way forward though, so get the most powerful single card you can get, an 8800GT, maybe stretch to the 512mb GTS which can be had for £190 now...

i would go for a gainward 8800gt golden sample ddr3 1gb 650/1900 clock speeds with ddr3 1gb you can sail through games on the max res i have one and they are great would cost about £220-250 but well worth the money cheers tork

Apologies for my absence, had a wicked cold (yep, big puff or what) :D

Erm, so the general consensus is not to CF but to go for a single card, eh? I would have thought that say 2 x HD3650s (512 versions) would give any Nvidia card (maybe not the ultra but that`s fantasy money still for me) a good run.

Mmm, I`ll hold off and see what the future holds, with the advent of the Nvidia 9 series and no 8 series driver updates for 2 months ... frightened I`ll end up spending on soon to be old hat technology ;)

Thx all, appreciated :)
