hi all,

some advice/help in the following,

have 8800gtx stripped down to fit EK full cover block and have purchased Coollaboratory liquid metal pad to use.

on opening the pack, i find the size of the pad is only 20mm square and the 8800 gtx die size is about 40mm square. it is recommended for nvidia and ati cards...but will the pad liquidify enough to cover the full gtx die size??

or better just to use mx-2 to be on the safe side?

Have to taken the IHS off that?!?

If so ceramiquee is the only thing you should be using.

If not it'll be fine, just make it central.

Dont use a metal based TIM on an exposed die, especially if it goes through the same state changes as CCLP TIM

As Ham said you need Ceramique

For an exposed die you will probs be OK with AS5 or MX-5 or whatever if carefully applied. I certainly wouldn't use a pad of liquid metal like that though

assumed that it being described for gpu, i would be ok, but glad i posted before fitting, will just go with ceramique, as i am quite attached to my 8800gtx.

if you have the ihs still on your chip then a 20mm tim coverage is fine.

the chip itself only makes about 20mm contact with the ihs plate.

i am using a swiftech mcw60 waterblock with my 88gtx and that has a contact of about 20mm with the ihs plate.

the same block keeps my 88 at low to mid 40s.

if you are going to use the liquid metal pad you must clean the surface of your waterblock and ihs with articlean or another thermal cleaner or you could end up with a horror story to tell us all.

Erm, it looks to me like that silver thing in the middle is actually the Coollaboratory pad, not the die. I think he put it on the IHS just to give us an idea of the size difference.

(Correct me if I'm wrong)

yep, just put pad on for size difference, i should have made that clearer in original post.will use either the ceramique or the mx-2.
