8800GT - plastic film

So, I happen to have a pc setup to take the strain whilst I do some upgrades to something else.

It's time to shift the harddrives and I notice the mobo tray at the rear isn't just hot - u could bearly touch it.

Just for the hell of it, it's got the 8800GT for a display and I figured run F@H on it. I knew the card ran hot, so perhaps 75% would be ok.

But the heat, it's quite beyond.

Reaching around for the drives, yanked them out, rehoused them. Out the corner of my eye I notice theres a flappy thing on the shroud of the 8800.

For some reason it must have gone out of my head completely to remove the clear plastic film that covers the card !

ffs. Just a bit cooler now.

What clear plastic cover, I've got 2 8800 GT's and I've never seen this clear plastic cover. The panic is sweeping through my veins as I type this message, I'll never get to sleep now. Pictures please .............

don't worry dude, its just a clear protective film that manufacturers put on most shiny things to stop them getting fingerprints or scratches on them during assembly and packing. It's the same stuff they put over the screens on new mobile phones if i'm not mistaken.

rasta was the plastic actually covering the fan? that seems unusual to me... Then again I've never owned an 8800gt and tend to buy my graphics cards used. Thinking again they have ventilation slats in the shroud right? It's lucky you found the plastic before the card slow-roasted itself!

Guyz, the plastic covers the logo printed surface on the fan side, not actually over the fan tho.

It's similar to when u buy a new phone and there's a plastic anti scratch thing over the screen. Only it's a lot closer fitting. U may not see it unless pointed out.

I don't think I've ever seen a warning for removing it til the GTX280. Might have missed it tho.

U should easily tell. As with most things that don a plastic film, the corners generally come away easy.

Increase ur standards, leave the house a bit more, and don't be scared to talk to them.
