8800 Stock cooler

Recently my 8800 has been hitting 78oC on stock speeds.

This is very hot, you could seriously fry your eggs on it. ;)

Any ideas on how to lower this temp without replacing the heatsink?

Thanks! :D

I just took the side off my case and pointed a fan at the card.. take a look at my rig gallery.

That is what I have had it like all summer so far.. :(

I have a fan blowing at the top of the card, the PCB bit.

But still a good old 78oC!!

mine blowing towards to air intake on the card tho.. :) is it idleing at 78 or loading at 78?

Oh yeah, Load is 78.. I know it is within the safe limit.. but I don't like it one bit.

I could replace the thermal paste.. but I don't think it is paste.

I believe it has thermal pads.. which means if I replace with paste I won't get the same contact. :eh:

From what I've read, once the cooler has been taken off, its difficult to mount it back on well, and get either the same or better temperatures.

I could be very wrong, but this was the impression I got.

I too was toying with the idea of changing the cooler for a waterblock, but this put me off as I will need to sell it on with the original cooler in place.

mien loads are 70, with 576/1700 speeds, Superclocked from evga, fan 100%, 2 92mm intakes on full and an ambient on 30C in my room!

Quite simply the best solution is water cool it. Not the cheapest option but the most effective.

My 8800GTS 640MB maxes out at 49° overclocked to 700MHz core & 1000z memory!

Have you cranked the fan all the way up to 100%?? Makes a massive difference.. When I have mine clocked all the way up it only hits like 70 degrees max full load.

Dont be afraid of taking the fan off has its super easy the only advice is that when all the screws are out the paste is very air tight and will take a bit of force and time to pull off but should be no probs

plus i have a thermalright HR-03 plus for sale which had my gtx at 700/2100mhz at 100% load 54 deg and 42 idle

They run very hot, Mine hit 95C once lol now you couldnt just cook an egg you could almost make a cup of tea lol

Haha, could be useful, cheaper powering the GPU than it is powering the kettle! ;)

I am Mr Rast, but only on the CPU. So my CPU is uber cold but the GPU isn't.. or at least isn't to my liking. :)
