8 GPU Server Super Computer HELP!!

Will primarily do Scientific Visualization

Will be using 8 GTX 580's *Of course not SLI*

I would like a board of course supporting the 8 PCI slots needed for the 580s, but also uses a newer socket of course. LGA 2011 would be great! But im sure that might not be out at the moment, so XEON processors would be a great second.

Planning on water cooling, not for sure if we will do ALL 8 cards, the work would be ridiculous, but its not far fetched. Atleast the CPU(s) will have a loop for them.

Of course we would be using 3x 1200W corsair PSU's.

And 32+gbs of DDR3 Memory.

And only need two 500gb SSD's that are sata III but have high IOPS. Will create a raid with them.

Also what kind of case could we get all of this to fit in?

8*GPU's?

Even the SR3 only has 7 slots.

youll have to wait for the new duel socket boards as most server boards mix in PCI slots, and even then im not sure if they'll have 8 sockets.

And for watercooling, i dont think they'll be any other way, mainly as theyll have to be stacked one on top of the other so the block would have to be thin as well unless you try to use raiser board but that'll create more problems than it solves.

don't think it is possible to have that many GPUs on 1 board

I know people were getting driver troubles using more than 5 on the SR2

not to mention not a lot of the 2011 xeon boards will have 7 physical PCI-E x16 slots let alone 8

best off getting the more powerful tesla, quadro cards but only 4-5 of them

I would look at the case labs cases as they are massive and can normally fit a crazy amount of hardware inside but carry a high price tag though if you are able to payout for 8 580s i'm guessing that isnt a issue

another suggestion i can make is setting up a farm

so spread it out across a couple of PCs. I know with 3dsmax i can install it on every computer in the house and render across them and effectively have 14 threads and 12GB ram rendering if i wanted to so i am sure your software would allow this as well

Tbh if he actually was going to be spending that much money he would never have posted here in the first place.....

Its a 'dream rig' style post from someone that doesnt actually know enough to understand what they are asking isnt actually available.

ie: a time waster.

That's a good point, they would probably want some very experienced specialist advice IMO.

Also, 580s for calculations? Lol Pointless. Tesla cards are aimed for this sort of thing.

the geforce are more suited to the graphics side and the quadro/tesla stuff is purposely designed for the bonkers workstations for ray tracing and all that other cool stuff

Also the power consumption would be off the charts i know you have stated about 3 ax1200s so instead of "8" gtx 580s what about 3 tesla c2075s. Even the 2050 for goodness sake lol so you will roughly only need one ax1200 maybe a smaller second psu in a 2/1 setup that would crunch numbers like a beast
