7970 OC'd vs 7950 OC'd

Has anyone seen a comparison of the performance of the 7970 to the 7950 when both are properly overclocked (as in not some 100 MHz factory OC)

I know I can dig up overclocked benches for them individually and compare but differences in driver versions and test rigs make a direct comparison difficult. I have seen 7950s OC'd to the point where their performance exceeds that of the 7970 but I was wondering if the 7970 would go proportionally higher or when OC'd the two would be of comparable power.

The more I think about this the more I get the impression that the difference in performance wont be very big but it would be nice to have a reliable comparison to back this up. I am intending to W/C so temps/noise from OCing isnt an issue to take into account.

hii, iv made my 7970 go rlly far with luck, so yeah, but i doubt the 7950 would use so much amps and volts, i did add liquid nitrogen then after Liquid helium, liquid oxygen actually worked thru waterblock. i had used clay and nailpolish to seal areas i need before i tok whole motherboard in melted plastic just rlly fast, so soldering and capacitors doesnt get too hot, it worked and its the best LNC coat iv found for motherboards as it works for atleast 5 yrs on Phase cooling.

nail polish melts at such temps but it was used to hold clay as i made holes in clay so that the clay stays in shape "mostly"

it was my first LNC test, never really going to use other than watercooling again and air

i personally like watercooling most so ill stick to it

I've read quite a few reviews, including TTLs and they all suggest that an oc'd 7950 is as good as an OC'd 7970. I've been convinced enough to buy the 50 as a result.

nah, my 7970 atm beats the 680, mostly because i get more fps and scores, 680 atm is bit laggy in some games with latest drivers, but we will see if ill go for 680s or 690 or 7990 or two or three 7970 or if i got enaugh for mars 3 if it comes out, id buy tht, depends on price but not if its more than 2200 pounds, u can even sell the Mars 3 at three times the price after 2 yrs

I thought it was like this: an oc'ed 7950 is almost similar to a stock 7970. When you oc a 7970 you will have 7-10 fps more in games over the stock 7970

Nvm. Id checked it and they are actually very close when both oc'ed and in gaming. Especially if you can get the 7950 up to 1150c/1575m

In 3dmark11 and vantage X the 7970 rules over the 7950

sexy, now i don't regret my 7950 purchase

Yea that is what I was expecting too but on average they are pretty damn close overall. 7970 isn't worth the extra £60, £15 maybe. It's one of those things though. Synthetic benchmarks really aren't turning into fps.

@ DWC - I've got no idea what you are talking about lol!

Is this going to be a part of your desk build? (sorry for not answering your questions!)

Yeah this will be part of the desk, Im not even thinking about Nvidia cards due to the ridiculous price difference for no real performance gain. I have been doing a lot of planning on it lately and some crazy ideas are starting to come up that are breaking the budget so I am trying to think through my component choices to be more cost effective.

This is the impression I am getting too, it looks like the two overclock to similar speeds and performance difference isn't really worth the price difference. Feels like AMD keep releasing 2nd tier cards than can OC or be unlocked to equal or beat the top tier ones :S Not complaining but doesn't seem like great business sense to me

i havent really seen any 680 having more fps in bf3, so yeah, i got allready a 680 iv overclocked but nah, its not something for me

i get more fps with my 7970.

but again it might be some drivers that will change this

Those scores look good, I guess I can see how my budget is going when I decide. I am tempted by the 7970 but 7950 is so close. 7950 is def going in the rig I am building for my bro as he is on a tight budget.
