Hi guys, next month is my birthday and i may buy myself another 7970 Lightning. I just want two of these beasts but i dont know if my RIG can handle them. I have

· Corsair 500r

· Corsair AX850w

· Corsair H100

· Corsair Vengeance Blur 8GB

· 2x Corsair Force 3 120gb RAID0

· Western Digital Green 1TB

· MSI Z68A-GD65-G3

· Intel i7 2600K @ 4.2Ghz

· MSI 7970 Lightning

Will the AX850 be enough power to run these beasts or will i have to buy a AX1200?

Your psu is perfect for the job.

Only issue is pcie bandwidth. You will be dividing a gen 2 x16 into 2x 8 lanes. That means you can only feed 4gb/s to each card which they will fill at times. Therefore in some games you will not see the scaling you might expect.

Z77 with a 3570k would solve that.

See here for more info.

There is a difference between the bandwidths but were talking lass than a frame in most cases. I cant see that much performance drop. But i will take a closer look. Thanks For the info.

To be clear - you will see a big improvement in performance overall. Yes, in certain situations the scaling might not be as high as the cards are capable of i.e. worst case scenario you might only see 60% not 90%. But that probably would only make a 15% fps diffeence which you are likely to not notice with the fps twin 79xx produce.

Really it's just useful to know where the weak point is when, a good while in the future, it gets to the stage where you feel you need to upgrade. You would need to upgrade your mobo/cpu to see any improvement in fps even if you upgraded the gpus.
