7870 Tahiti LE problem

Hey folks,

I've run into a problem with my new card, and I was hoping for some advice.

A few weeks ago, I bought the Powercolour 7870 Tahiti LE "EZ Edition". I had originally ordered the "MYST Edition", also from Powercolour, but it was out of stock and NCIX weren't sure when it was going to be restocked. The EZ seemed identical other than the shroud on the cooler - metal for MYST and plastic for EZ - and at the same price. So I went for it.

So here's the problem. Using Afterburner, I had OC'ed the core speed to 1200MHz and upped the power limit to +20%. Running 3DMark 11, I saw a noticeable difference in the P scores (P7398 stock with 7192 graphics, Vs. P8284 OC'ed with 8316 graphics). There didn't seem to be any problems with the OC, though I haven't been running any demanding games. Star Wars: The Old Republic has been it, and that's not exactly a demanding title.

But today, someone on the NCIX forums asked if I'd mind running a test using Unigine Heaven while paying attention to the core speed graph in Afterburner or GPU-Z. I did that, and to my horror the 1200 MHz OC apparently wasn't getting enough volts to remain stable. It constantly jumped between the OC and 925 MHz (50 MHz UNDER stock). So I dialed the OC down to 1150, then 1100, 1050, 1000. Same results at each speed. So I returned to the default clocks, turned the power limit back to zero, and ran Heaven 4.0 again. Even worse this time - not only could it not reliably hold it's rated clock, but it went down to 925 MHz and stayed there. So I turned the power limit back up to +20% and tried Heaven again. Still no dice, though it did jump back and forth between 975 and 925.

So I'm wondering if I got a dud card, or maybe the entire production run is undervolted, or...? This my first experience with OC'ing a graphics card, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had a chance to over clock the Myst edition and i ran it at 1180 clock and 1600mhz on memory with 8% power adjust.

I would think its either an issue with Heaven, try reinstalling it
it could be a drive issue - what catalyst version are you on?
or you could need to RMA the card, try the first 2 options first.

i am having the same problem in with my vtx3d 7870 black, i have checked in through mis afterburner an my core clock at 975mhz.it kept bouncing from 975mhz an 501mhz, any ideas on how i can fix this

Nah, it's not a Heaven problem, it behaves the same just using the GPU-Z rendering test. And yeah, Catalyst 13.1.

Same problem with my 7870 EZ seems to be power control issues with amd catalyst and or drivers(POWER PLAY PROBLEM) .... they tried to make the card as power efficient as possible... but all it does it interferes with gaming at full clock.
I tried all the bios .28 .30 .31 .32 does the same on all of them maybe a bit less on the .32 Only way to fix is to use MSI Afterburner with all the boxes checked off in the settings and then choose your overclock speed

This card will easily overclock past 1200MHZ in most cases.
Scoring above P9000 in graphics.

I sent mine in for an RMA yesterday.

So Max, your core speed stays relatively steady at 1200MHz+ when you overclock?

As I said, mine seemed to run fine at 1200, but when I ran a benchmark while looking at the sensors in Afterburner, I saw that it was spending about 95% of its time at 925. That was with the power limit turned up to +20%. Even adjusting the voltage in Afterburner Beta didn't have much of an affect other than generating more heat and fan noise.

mine was doing the same jimbo untill i downloaded the afterburner beta an turned off the powerplay support, now it stays at 1050mhz with 69c/70c temps no extra volts at all

from what ive been reading people are having better results and more stable systems using amd overdrive inside CCC.... maybe give that a shot when you get chance?
