Sorry to say mate but if you are playing at 1080p you would be a fool to buy a 780Ti unless you just want an epeen score. An R9 290/290X/780 Will easily run BF4 on maximum at 1080p at over 80 FPS. If you want to spend the extra £150 for a slightly higher number you won't actually get any benefit from be my guest. I would only advise someone to get a 780Ti if they are running at 2560 x 1440 or above.

So you don't think the extra power will give me higher frames?

Yes it will. But it will be an almost pointless gain for £150 at that resolution. At a higher res it would have a much higher impact.

As you can see in tom's video. even at 1440p on absolute maximum with 8xAA (which you really shouldn't be running unless you have that power just to waste, 2xAA is enough I find) the 780ti gets an average of about 62 FPS all the time, add another 25% onto that ish because 1080p is 25% less pixels than 1440p, and you are talking 77.5 FPS AVERAGE at 1080p with 8xAA. Knock that down to 2xAA and you will be looking at around 100 FPS I imagine.

A 780 in his video gets an average of 55 fps. + 25% to 1080p is 68.75. Take that down to 2xAA and you will be talking around 90 ish, 10 fps difference? Sounds like a lot but since you will be over 80 FPS anyway I highly doubt you will notice.

£150 for an extra 10% performance you won't really notice. Doesn't seem worth it to me at all.

Of course, you could always go with the obviously superior card, the 290 once aftermarket cooling comes out. Even less of a performance difference between that and the 780Ti than the 780, and it's cheaper. With the aftermarket coolers they will be much cooler and quieter (and thus faster because of PowerTune) Seems like a win win to me.

The OC version blows it out of the water, with less heat, less wattage, quieter, with extra features... I can only expect fans will cool down the 290x by 10 degrees celsius, then the slightest overclock will fly over that because it's so damn hot!! 290x is already near the maximum threshold that a chip should handle, I don't see much headroom.

Lmao your using a synthetic benchmark to prove its faster in gaming?
Synthetic benchmarks are mute and only useful if you are competing, using it to say one card is better than the other in gaming is pretty worthless as games will perform far differently.

Really erks me how people use toms review as the definitive review, i don't disregard it but looking at other sites as well I don't come to the same conclusion everyone here has. It shows they all are very close (except in the Nvidia optimized games and AMD optimized games) in games that are not exactly catered to one side. IMHO it is worth the wait for aftermarket coolers. I beg to differ the difference won't be big as some are saying. The noise, heat issues for the most part will be gone and therefore clocking them higher is achievable, maybe not to the 1300mhz clocks you get on water but a decent boost nonetheless has shown to make a difference.

Sorry to nit pick but 1440p has 3,686,400 pixels total where as 1080P has 2,073,600.
A tad bit more than 25% ^_^

Wow, I didn't realise the difference was that huge, I was under the impression that 1080p was around 2.8 million for some reason....

Even MORE reason why not to get a 780ti for 1080p gaming ;)

Or get the 780 Ti and crank everything up to max including max AA :D

To the original poster ( Kroma ),
Since your only running 1080p , decide which brand you want (AMD or Nvidia ),
Then decide how big your wallet is.
For most of us , price is a deciding factor.
If you want the best ( 780ti at the moment ), then pay the price for it.
We'll know more about AMD once they release Mantle , if you want to wait.

and the waiting game goes on forever. if he waits for mantle then he might as well wait for maxwell, and then for the next AMD release and so on.
mantle is a bit overhyped at the moment.

Indeed, At this rate he might as well wait for quantum computing lol ^_^

I think how funny it is that people think mantle will only work for AMD... It's an API file!!!

Exactly, Mantle will be exactly like Nvidias "NVAPI" in Battlefield 3, It will give a slight performance boost i.e maybe 10-15 fps for AMD cards but nothing magical.

10-15fps is magical.. Imagine how well low end cards will perform with an extra 10-15fps or even high end cards on higher resolution.
