780 sli or 980 for 4K

Sorry for thread hijack.

I'm having a similar issue for 1440p

I have a single 1440p screen and currently run a ref gtx780, now i have "some" money i can use .. upto £250-300 for another card. Do i go to 980 (£300 SH) or just get another 780 (£150 SH)

I'm not a heavy Pc gamer but i do like the settings dialled up on anything i play (mostly Arma 3).

What do you guys think?

I just got a 980 and getting a 2nd soon I'm thinking about going to 1440p after watching TTL 980 ti sli review 4k would be awesome but if I went 4k with 2 gtx 980's it would have to be a g-sync 4k monitor...

Neither. I would suggest you try and sell the 780 and spring for a 980ti or similar. Since you mostly play Arma.

Sorry should of said... a 980ti is probably out of the question as i have a baby on the way and this is the only money i can muster before it drops.

Well I have since upgrade to 980Ti sli, but 780s in SLI had no problem at 1440p with settings cranked up. depends if its 144hz or 60hz also, but at 60hz they handle everything thrown at them.

I can see this might quickly require it's own thread.

Personally I would check the vram requirements of Arma 3 with the settings you anticipate running and if it's under 3GB then finding yourself a second 780 would probably be the cheapest and most advantageous upgrade option.

I personally run 1440p with SLI 780's and most games do very well however GTA V runs out of vram a little before it runs out of performance which makes it a little disappointing. I still wouldn't swap them for one 980 though!

I wouldn't rule out AMD, they are typically a little better value.

I see, congrats and my condolences at the same time :D

Well at the end of the day, I just cant recommend the 980 for 4k, others may say otherwise. However when I was using a tri sli 980 setups, I found that my 290x tri fire setup was just smoother... I made sure to test and there was no throttling on the 980 setup and were running at 1400mhz too. According to GPU-Z.

So I would say look for a cheap second hand 780 and just SLI and OC the cards. Or if your open to getting AMD, perhaps take a look at the 290(x) cards, they might still be on sale somewhere if they have any old stock left.

Each to their own though.
