Ooo nice one. Really looking forward to this.. Seeing the prices adds even more mystery. I mean, at those price points it's sounding like the 6970 is on par with the 570. But then that leaves no top end, meaning the 580 gets to romp it.

But surely the 6970 can't compete with the 580? if it does then sheeeet, I'll be waiting for the price drop response from Nvidia and getting me a 580

Well it's quite amazing really. Like, on a big scale. I mean, crap, you could actually make a soap opera about this year in the GPU world. Honestly it's been absolutely bloody brilliant.

ATI win round one and start off flying.

Nvidia counter, half decent cards too hot too power hungry too expensive.

Nvidia come back again whilst ATI sit with their thumb arrogantly up their backsides thinking the 5xxx series will last forever.

Nvidia launch the 570/80.. PIMP SLAP.

ATI counter with IMO the pathetic 6850/70 which can only really compete with the Nvids in Xfire. But, I see your Xfire and I raise you SLI.

And now this. Incredible. Just absolutely incredible.

Even more thrilling for me though. I mean, I got a 470 two months ago for £173 and price to power nothing can beat it

Just makes me wonder though.. Are ATI already returning to their normal routine? putting out cheap cards (well, they'll have to drop the prices soon on those results) that are not as fast as the big hungry Nvids?

Thankfully I've been careful as it's been reaaaally easy to get burned on GPUs this year. But yeah, very very exciting times for sure

Indeed its very much like a soap opera lol! luckily I have not bought myself a card so far this year and was just waiting to see how their new batch did so with the actual results and prices of the new batch wont be needing to rethink my initial buys of 2011

I saw those benches also, and pretty much everywhere I looked the 6970 was compared the to 570 but as just below it or quite a bit below. Being in the same price range as the 570 seriously doesn't help it... Without a price drop there are just a few saving graces for AMDs sales... I wonder if the 6970 turns out like this for sure what it'll mean for the 6990 as Ive read quite a few people who are just annoyed with driver issues on the 5970. Alien is right though, soap opera indeed and I like it

All you need to do is look at the prices. Which are up and are real. The 6970 costs £280. That means it has no hope in hell of touching the 580. Which puts it in 570 territory only it costs more. So, at best it might be slightly faster than a 570 (if those results are BS) but at worst it could actually be like those benchmarks and be a bit poo.

Yeah. A lot of the leaks are saying the same thing (6970 matching or slightly beating the 570). And with a price of $450 in the states, that makes it seem like quite the rip-off on my end. I'd rather pay either $100 less for a card with about the same performance (570), or save an extra $50 to get a card that just demolishes it (580).

Either way, this will actually be my first transition to Team Green (I've been using ATI all of my life), unless the official benchmarks wildly disprove the leaks.

I was thinking of building an AMD rig in 2011 but these leaks are almost enough to make me go Intel/Nvidia. Hopefully these cards are only bad in leaks and not on benchmarks.

Just read a review. It's true. They're nothing special and Nvidia beat them to the punch this time.

I mean yeah, they're good fast cards compared to the 5850 and 5870 but they're no 5 series beaters.

I was really hoping the 6970 would be something special. But from the scores I'm seeing its just the opposite. The 6970 gets a score of P5500 in 3dmark 11. My 5870 overclocked gets P5021. I was hoping to get two of these cards but i may go Nvidia And ive owned nothing but ATI since the 3850 lol. Oh well maybe the updated drivers will help this card out.

Dude updated drivers aren't going to help. Watch Tom's video. They're (compared to the 5XXX series rads) too hot, too loud and not very fast. Note how Tom is comparing them to the 4xx series Nvidia.

As such the 570 is, to repeat a phrase (only this time in green) cooler, quieter ETC.

Honestly, the 570 beats the 6970 in such a fashion that I simply would not touch the 6 series cards..

The backplate led me to wonder what was going on with these cards.

It feels strange (yet rather nice) to say this but I think it's time for you ATI owners to go green tbh. Well, at least this time.

Ed. Even if the new drivers do improve performance you still have to take into consideration that they still cost more than the 570.

Ed 2. And can't fold, do physx or offer CUDA.
