6800k vs 6850k?

Hey all,

So I'm going to be upgrading to x99 in the up n coming months before I retire my screw driver and cable ties.

I have decided to get the rampage 10th anniversary edition and 16gb ram and the Titan XP.

Now I'm torn on the CPU....

6800k or 6850k?

I know the 6850k has higher clock and more PCIE lanes but if I get the Titan XP there's no way il get a second so I feel as though the 6800k is more sensible option? I'm getting a 950 pro nvme drive as well.

The CPU and gpu will be watercooled.

I'm not familiar with x99 so not sure if the extra £££ for 12 extra PCIE lanes is worth it.

Thoughts?

If you are only running one GPU mate you won't need the lanes. I'm running a 5820k with a Titan XM, three internal sound cards and a X4 PCIE SSD. I don't have any issues and my benchmarks are all very good and where they should be. Even if you did want to go SLi you can still run them at X8 X8 which I have done repeatedly throughout history and never had any performance issues. Again, my scores were always where they should have been, maybe 1-3% slower than a test system using X16 X16.

In regards to the Samsung 950 pro isn't really essential so might skip that for now but If I was to get one in the future, would I need to remove the GPU to get it in :/

You do know the Rampage 10 is E-ATX right? And not ATX...

Just remember X99 has NO pcie lanes on the chipset so any PCIE hard drives, M.2 - U.2 all come off of the cpu lanes. Its not just about graphics.

I might be getting a month m.2 drive at some point and if I remember correctly they use 4x PCIE lanes? +16 from gpu still gives me 8 lanes to play with?

The 6850k is still in the line up just depends how soon I want to get all the gear.

If you buy an X99 system you are still likely to be using it in 3 or 4 years.

In that time GPU performance could increase 4 fold putting a lot of demands on the PCI-E lanes.

I would rather have a CPU that has 40 lanes available as they could come in useful in the future.

I went with the 6850K over the 6800K for this exact reason.

I guess having more PCIE lanes may come in handy in the future, my final decision won't be made until I have the time to empty the loop take my pc apart and order the bits lol

Thank you very much my friend! That's good to know was gonna use it as a boot drive but decided on a steam drive instead!

I really like the Samsung Pro drives I have got quite a few and they all take a lot of rough treatment but I have not had any fail yet.

I normally have them under the case mid plate or behind the motherboard.

I have a couple of 850 pros and they are flawless! I still have a WD 1TB black which I want to eventually retire.
