I'm building a rig for a mate who is on a tight budget. He wants the possiblity to go SLI in the future, but only has about £130 of his budget left to splash on a gpu.

Do you think he would be better going for a plain 6800 and unlocking the pipes/overclocking to GT levels (hopefully), or going with a 6600GT and overclocking it a bit?

Are the Vanilla 6800's Sli ready?? I didn't think they were?

Are the prices comparible? I thought the 6800NU's were £170ish?

If you can SLI with Vanilla 6800's.. And both of them had 16 working pipes and another working vertex shader, I'd go that! The problem is you can't always gaurentee it, but it's worth the bit extra if you get a card like Nick's.

Yeah I agree. But I didn't think the 6800NU's were SLI ready?? :eh:

I just assumed, so you could well be right. I'll have to check that.

The 6800's i'm looking at are £130, so pretty much the same price as a 6600GT.

Well with one 6800NU + a bit of luck getting all the pipes + vortex shader then he'll be good to go.

With 1 x 6600GT now and 1 x 6600GT later he may also be good to go.

When ya find out give us a shout mate...I'd be interested to know :)

It looks like there are some 6800NU's with SLI - but not one of the ones i found going cheap. So it looks like the 6600GT path for him, which is fine because the 6600GT kills the 6800NU in most things that i've seen at stock speeds.

Yeah I spotted one @ tekheads with SLi (well when you click on Sli it comes up). I haven't heard/seen reviews of them in SLi tho...I thought it was GT's and above that went in SLi. Oh well, you live and learn!

But yeah a 6600GT + 1 later will rock! :)

Go with the GT... I didnt think that the NU's were were SLi compatible. Hell I didnt even know they made a PCI-E version, lol.

im with kemp..didnt know 6800's were SLI...

i say 6600gt because you sound kinda cheap with 6800's.....its just a cheap 6800gt.where as a 6600gt is top of its class of 6600's....and of course it kicks ass

I think ur best overall choice would be the 6800 as you could perform some RivaTuner magic on it and nearly turn it into a GT which pwns the 6600GT.
