Ok i need to know if i should take advantage of mr fraggle's offer. Although they are 32bit i need to know if the 64bit offers anything more for now and the future...All i do is literally game, chat to mates and homework...normal teenager stuff :p

I know the support isnt really out there yet but will it be worth it in the future?

Thanks

i use 64 bit server 2003, and i find it slightly faster in running windows, and i ahvent found anything that wont work properly yet

But is that slightly faster speed worth the £17 ish more with hoping for x64 drivers to come out for your accessories..ARGH

Update: Fraggles can get me 64bit for the same price so its literally which will benefit me most in the long run

But will it run faster and more reliable in the future? All my stuff is new anyway well not old...Still reckon 32bit has the longterm advantage over X64?

I too have seen a few things recently about how 64 bit drivers will, at least initially, be inferior to the 32 bit ones. Even common things like nVidia drivers (if you notice they have 32 bit Vista G80 drivers but no 64 bit ones yet). IMO go with 32 bit for this year, maybe get 64 bit for a new system next year

Thing is I cannot go purchasing another version as I won't be able to afford another copy :(

Say i bite the bullet and go 64bit just for the future advantages...how bad will my issues be?

I literally jsut have to sum up if its worth going for x64 if im not gonna upgrade in the future.

Ok thanks for all your help guys but ive decided to wait for more vista drivers to come into play as atm i wouldnt be able to use my printer rofl!

Also the 64bit arguement is too close to call especially for an undecisive person like me

hehe ^^

It seemd a great idea at first but after lookign through for drivers...there weren't any for 32bit nm 64bit

32 more widely suported but most 32 bit drivers work on 64bit so far the ones i have tested

i know you aint ment to but i have been runnig some xp drivers on vista seems to work

From what ive gathered you can install as many times as you like just not on other pcs and in yours after 1 mobo change, correct me if im wrong

i duno i have had problems with xp asking for activation when i changed a sound card i am going to guess that its a similar thing and you can only upgrade without formating otherwise it will ask for activation

64Vista is going to have HUGE problems over at least the first year of support mate

And yet you have to pay a same price for it. In the same sense that u can buy a suposedly fully working 32 bit version.

The race will no doubt be on to make versions of software/games that will only work with vista, and in a sense leave the user having to upgrade in order to move forward.

I have no doubt, that upon installing this rolled out version(s) of the OS, there will be clusters of patches being ready from the first day, and it will continue through the year.

It`s beyond doubt that the 64 bit versions, along with software made for it, will be amazingly fast, when they work - but we must be looking far down the line before we can hope for this to be a reality.

And for the 64bit version of server to be a ~little~ faster than the 32bit ? Still ? Is this not something close to a scam ? I`m sorry, but knowing chip architecture, 64bit commands/addressing should be somewhat faster than their 32 bit counterpart.

By the time the 64bit Vista becomes a really good platform to work off - I guarantee u the biggest buzz word of the time will be Windo$e 2010. Costing a further $300, and all that it promises.

We, the industry as a whole, are running around in circles. It`s too bad no1`s got the balls to say enough is enough - b4 u bring "this" out, get what u promised the other thing was going to do working as u said it would - or give u`r prospective clients a refund b4 they buy the next "this".

Where`s the rant section ?

oh, get the 32 bit version and hope that atleast somewhere down the line it`ll also deal with multiple cores very well.

am i right in saying you can buy a version of disc that has both 32 and 64bit?

Seems like it's on retail version though.

U pay for each variety or buy the DVD with both for a higher price.

But it's not Microsoft who are having the problems, it's the HUGE (and just so we understand how huge, just take a look at your local internet store) amount of hardware that Vista is EXPECTED to support. Everyone else is having a problems with 64bit drivers/programs for Vista and do you know why?

Because Microsoft want them to be good. Solid, stable and perform well and a whole load of software companies just don't have the level of dev teams that MS do/can afford to keep up. or they don't want to invest in stuff that's not going to affect their sales (to the average Joe who knows nothing about software).

Microsoft are actively pushing 64bit, but lots of companies are refusing to follow. What does that say about the industry?

It's full of lazy companies who don't care much about software development as long as thier product sells, that's what it says

I'll be having the same problem soon. I'll be getting an OEM copy of vista ultimate in the next few weeks (unless I can get a cheap retail from the US), so I'll need to choose between 32 and 64 bit. As far as I can see, the long term advantages of 64bit out weight the short term problems that it might bring with it.

Just annoying that the OEM copy only has either 32 or 64, and not both like the retail :(.

Microsoft should have stuck to their guns in this area. Now that they've backed down, we're going to be seeing a lot of buggy code getting around. Disappointing really :(
