5770 worth WCing?

So I have a 5770 that is underclocked.

I was just playing NFP Hot Pursuit and started getting jitter. This is at full graphical detail @ 1920x1080. (This is after 3 hours none stop!)

Now I have my case on the desk and i am able to feel the heat coming off it when I'm booming down the motorway at 200 mph in a Bugatti.

So during game I checked ATI's CCC and found the card to be running at 65C.

So as I thought I would be water cooling my rig in the new year I thought about the graphics card.

WCUK has a 5770 plate £56.19 ... First of all, Is this allot for one? as I have never water-cooled a card before.

And second, is this going to do much for me?

I don't put the clock over 900MHz at the moment because it over heats.

I think I would need some thing on the top to help???

Any way, As you lot are the "experts" I will leave it to you.

First off, what case do you have? My 5770 (that I'll be replacing soon enough) is able to OC just fine at 920 Mhz with a 1350 on the memory speed (I could go higher on memory, but there seems to be a limitation on my particular card that causes it to crash after 1355) and runs with auto fan control at around 70C max. And my current case is an NZXT Apollo, which has crappy airflow and almost no cable management.

If you have a decent case, then it sounds like there may be some sort of defect with your card, as most people tend to get pretty high OCs on 5770s without the card even breaking a sweat.
 
Only you can answer this.

65c isn't too bad for a video card. CPU how ever, its gets to a back down or get a new cooler. 80c for me is the limited me gpu wise. unless i'm benching then 100c.

Is Watercooling worth it? Maybe. Do you need it probably not. But then again thats how i see things. Many things comes into play with water cooling.

  • Are you willing put up the extra work to maintain it?
  • Cost
  • Setup type

A lot of people recommend changing up your fluids after a month and cleaning your loop. Preventing gunk build up.

Cost, water cooling could get very expansive. Depending on block, pump and radiator. Tubing and coolant is fairly cheap.

Again, you could have the most overkill water cooling setup for the most amount of money or the cheapest but the best bang for your buck route. Generally when water cooling. Like TinyTomLogan said in this videos, Tubing, radiator size, block, pump and flow is important. Higher flow = lower temp. But You also need a good way to cool off the heat being transfered to the coolant with a radiator. Got to remember that fans with higher static pressure are best for dense fins heatsinks and water cooling. Smaller the tubing means increase flow but your sacrificing more cooler water going into the block. A weak pump can only get you so far with water cooling...

So where to draw the line?

For me a entry-med end water cooling system, would be more then enough for your case.

Watercooling or a new card. I think a new card would the better route. It's more powerful(if your going with the 6870) giving you more fps and it also could mean more overclocking headroom
 
The reason I was considering it is because as soon as it gets hot... it jitters.

I have a CoolMaster Scout case. And about 5 fans 2 blow directly on it.
 
i would look at pricing, since WC will be costly but it gives you a chance to WC your parts in the future as well, Just need to swap the stock heatsink for a block and your all ready to go .

A 6780 will be around 134GBP(converted from Canadian currency) and water cooling will be a little less or more.

new card means better performance while a WC gives you cooler temps and more overclocking headroom and gives can be reused when you upgrade, just need a new block
 
The main reason for not getting the newer cards is the.size of them.

I only have 12" for PCIe cards.

And if I could get a 6750 for 130 I would but they are 170+ here ....

The 6870 is 9" long so that shouldn't be a problem.

At this point i would hold off.

What are you system specs? Sounds like drivers crashed to me. Have you tried running the 5770 stock? and see if it happens?

Running in stock i just get The Blue Screen of Death.
 
man this sounds like a really big problem with the card when did you get it? My xfx 5770 even oc does not even break a sweat, see if you have any warranty
 
should still be covered by warranty, get them to check it out, it should deffinatly not get hot under those circumstances. What brand if you dont mind me asking?
 
XFX.

I am more than likely going to swap it for a better one like the 58** or some thing, But i don't want them to think I'm RMAing it for the purpose.
 
They won't drop till Q3 or mid Q2...

But the XFX ATI Radeon HD 6850 is a geat price already at £156...

If i was to RMA my card i would speend a bit of Xmass money on upgrading.
