5770 Heat problem

Right, so today I played RUSE free weekend for a bit, and suddenly my screen went all black. I tried ctrl+alt+del but it didn't work. Then I noticed my screen went into stand-by mode. More strange stuff happend. The screen went on again and showed a gray screen with artifacts in it, then after that the screen went black with artifacts and then my screen went into stand-by mode again and I turned the PC off.

So I figured, it might be the temps. The idle temperature is 53 degrees with the fan on auto. I ran MSI Kombustor for a bit (Xtreme Burning Mode on, OpenGL 3 paths, 1280x1024 which is my max resolution) and the temperature hit 83C after 2 minutes, at which point my graphics card crashed. With the fan on 100% it stayed at 75 degrees.

It's around 25 degrees in my room, but for the past couple of days it's been hotter and I could play games just fine! I don't know if my temps should be lower with it being a 5770 Vapor-X and 5770's don't usually get really hot anyway, so I'd be grateful if any of you guys could answer that question for me.

Maybe my graphics card is dieing? I sure hope not :|

I forgot to mention my overclock on the card. It's a very mild overclock, nothing hardcore.

Core: 920 Mhz and memory: 1350 Mhz

Now I've read reviews and the temps should be around 20 degrees lower than what I'm having right now. Are the temps causing my 5770 to crash or is the card just dead?

seems as tho its the same as me

i have a referance card and i overclocked it to XXX clocks,my idle was 50c furmark took it to 93c at 50% fan that is not good lol.but it is due to the high ambaint temps,as soon as i added aanother front fan to blow air accross the GPU it whent down to 45c idle,i am taking back my 5770 tomoro,my point is the temps you see are due to the ambiant temps,i also spoke to XFX and told them my temps they said 'dont worry they are ok'

Might want to take the cooler off and replace the TIm with some decent mx3 or noctua compound and remount dude.

I'll do that ttl, but do you guys reckon it's normal that I'm getting crashes like this?

I mean.. it was fine untill today.. =/

That's most certainly not right. I have a 3870x2 and it's a pudding piler of a card. If I leave the fan at idle speed it idles at around 78c. However, with Afterburner I have tweaked it to run at 32% on idle. It is non audible at that speed and keeps the card @ 43c on idle. After that it then goes up in about 7c increments and the fastest I have seen it go is 65%. At that speed you can hear it but during say a Fallout 3 session it will only kick in about every ten minutes, whirr for about a minute then go back to 33%.

Just looked at mine for you mate. My rig has now been on about an hour. It's also so hot here today that when I laid on the leather sofa with no top on I stuck to it. And I am getting this at idle.

Which is darned good. However, here's the kicker. I am running Crossfire and that temp is for my top card which is pretty much blocked by the bottom one. I'm also running a chassis that is five or more years old in design with only a 120mm £4.50 Arctic in the front. Maybe my case cools better than I gave it credit for in th e review?

Either way your temps are bloody wild tbh. Tom is probably and hopefully spot on. The thermal grease could have been buggered on the production line and may have failed. I would either return the card or repaste it.

Thank you AlienALX!

But I don't think it should crash at 83 degrees, should it? Could this also be due to the thermal grease?

I've only got some prolimatech thermal grease available to me at the moment, would that do?

I heard it's pretty decent stuff.

I don't really feel like returning it since they might test it and tell me the card is fine, send it back to me and send me the bill. So, could the card be buggered? :(

I just cleaned my pc, the dust filters were clogged up a bit, and after booting up my idle temp was 41 degrees. After playing a game and letting it cool down for 10 minutes however, my idle temp didn't drop below 48 degrees. My load temp went from 83-crash to 79-non crash so far.

I know the 5770 is a seriously cool customer. I can't remember what I hit with Furmark now..

What I do know is that 82c for a single 5770 is pretty darned extreme temps for that card. I don't know what its thermal limit is but as I say, that sounds damn bloody hot for a wee little card like that, especially with their new technology.

As for thermal paste? breakdown can easily occur if it has not been applied correctly or it is crap. Look at this pic. Note the big missing hole in the top of the CPUs thermal paste?

OK so that bit must have stuck to the bottom of the cooler when I removed it, huh?

Nope. It literally discintergrated (sic possibly). My CPU burned a clear hole in the paste, making my idle and max temps go up 6c idle and 9c on load. I literally came down that much just by applying some of this.

Now as I say, they could have applied it badly at the factory, or it could have degraded, or your card could be buggered. I would try pasting it first though dude.

the crashes is due to the rapid raise in temp,83c is normal for game playing (accordin to xfx) i would not worry about it,you could change the TIM as some people with our issue, have seen a 23c drop in load temps,so it may be worth doin it

23C? Wow. Would my prolimatech tim be good enough? I'm kind of running low on money :(

And another question: Will I lose my warranty if I remove the heatsink?

the prolima is non conductive so yeah it should be fine.

Warany wise as long as there isnt a sticker over any of the screws or something that will be broken if you remove the heatsink youll be fine.

If you do RMA just dont tell them you have done anything to it. ;)

Will do. Just ordered some ArctiClean and MX-3 since I can't find my prolimatech stuff :(

Ordered a new F3 1TB aswell so I will run those in RAID0. Too bad I'll lose my music collection since I can't back it up :(

Thanks for your help everybody! I'll let you guys know if I run in to any more problems or not. :)

why dont you put all your stuff on another HDD,when you use RAID does it format both drives

Because I don't have any other hard drives. I've got 2 hard drives lying around but they're both broken.

O.K. So last night I was playing Bad Company 2. A game I have never ever had any issues with whatsoever.

After about an hour my screen started 'burping' a bit with what looked like tearing. When I exited (which I did at once) I noticed my cards were in the high 70s. I also noticed that neither fan had done anything in the CCC control panel.

Sooo, I think ATI have a problem with the command center. I immediately installed Afterburner and created a profile. Once my fans were at 25% my cards idled at 39c.

Thing is this is not an isolated incident. I had exactly the same problem with my 3870X2. It was idling at 72c and climbing steadily with no fan action at all.

So. If you are already using Afterburner ignore every bloody word I said. If not? Then you will probably find the resolution to your issue right there ^.

Get an aftermarket app on that works, because CCC is FUBAR.

Well I was monitoring the temps with afterburner, but what drivers are you using?
