57 degrees on HD?

what kind of hard drive is it mate, some hard drives are known to get hotter than others, but thats alright temperature for a hard drive :)

bloodthirst: its a Maxtor Diamondmax10 200GB SATA. I suppose I have never been bothered with temp until recently.

Your data is the most valuable part of your computer. Even if you've backed everything up, hard drive failure is never good.

57 degrees may be within the manufacturers tolerance (?), but do you really want to risk it? Get some fresh air to it, a fan at 5v is fine for this.

How do you check how hot they are running?

I've got 2 and they were very hot to touch. They were sat on top of each other in the 3.5 drive bays so I moved one to just sit in a free 5.25 bay (no screws or anything as I lost my 3.5-5.25 conversion kit. Temp seems to have gone down a bit.

you cant really check how hot there running unless you have a hard drive cooler that is able to tell you the temperature for example the vantec vortex, placing a fan at the front of case near hard drives is ample to keep them cool

I use a software - speedfan which list temp for HD, CPU and chipset. Are these software temp gauge reliable?

I use Motherboard Monitor.

It says my Spinpoint is currently at 28 degrees.

Mid 30s is about as high as it goes.

For dell inspiron laptops you can use I8kfan gui ( a bit of software), im pretty sure many other softwares like these exist.

My Spinpoint runs circa 26, & Maxtors around 23/24 according to everest, thats with a 120mm fan blowing accross it :)
