500r cable management and parts selection?

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask for some tips and tricks as far as cable management is concerned, I fear that my components will look awesome when I get my rig parts shipped to my door and put together, but my cables won't...
I want to use my cpu cutout to route the 8pin and the frontpanel aswell as the sata cables for my 2 ssd's, what else can I do? The only things I would imagine are sleeved cables, are these worth anything in terms of looks if you see different cables coming from the powersupply?:confused:
what else could I do to make it look better?

Just give it a go first. Can't really give advice before.

I've never been a fan of putting the CPU power behind the motherboard - I mean, there's a cut out right there normally...

Just pull things as tight as you can, fastest possible routes behind the motherboard tray and resurface as close to the destination as possible.

How are you connecting fans? and what power supply do you have?
 
There is a surprising amount of room on the backside of the 500R and its really a brilliantly designed case with plenty of cable management features. I took the upper hard drive cage out to have one intake fan blowing directly on the GPU and motherboard and use the lower one and when I only had 2 drives in there, I could stuff some cables in there and hide them as well. Even with the 3rd drive in there, Ive still got some decent management. Im not obsessive about cable management and I don't try to hide every single wire though.

My next power supply will be fully modular and with a mod PSU, Im pretty confident I could hide virtually every wire. If your PSU is modular you should have no problems either.

Just look at all the parts I have in my first post, will give you an idea of the amount of cabling needed, front fans (2x af120) are going to be connected to the fan controller and the back fan (af140) will get connected to the motherboard, the top fans will get connected to the h100i pump.

SSD's will get mounted behind the mobo and no drive cages for me

I still just think have a go first. Ask for tips on how to improve after.

As long as you have in mind that you need to try to hide every cable, you should be alright.

Part selection - it depends what the rig is for really... And whether you've already ordered it all?
 
Save money on RAM and don't get the Dominator. You're basically paying all the money for looks. Get something different, and use the money to buy the 3930k instead.
Also, go for one larger SSD over the 2 small ones. No point in RAIDing SSDs. Doesn't really benefit performance, and you lose certain features by doing it.

I know that I pay for looks, but I can't bring myself to buy ugly ram like the veangeance sticks or the xms3 ones and g.sill's matte black ram sticks are only 2x4gb kits:mad:

What feataures do I lose? I wanted to get two of them because in raid they are faster than a single SSD, isn't that better?:confused:
 
They aren't really faster in real world use. Only really makes a difference in benchmarks.
In doing so, you're just doubling your potential failure rates, and shortening the life as you lose TRIM support and stuff.

I'm sure you can find RAM that you like somewhere? Mushkin maybe?

Try and get a 3930k instead, as I think it will benefit you far more in the things you do.

I'll look up that mushkin ram, looks good...

I think I will push up my budget and get myself the 3930k, but Ivy-E is not very far away now, shouldn't I just get the 3820 and then get the ivy?

I'd just go for the 3930k tbh. Ivy won't be that much better performing, and I'd rather get a new motherboard for a new series of processor anyway, regardless of compatibility.

Just some more advise on cable management, but do be prepared to take a fair bit of time working on it if you want to make it perfect. The 500R is an excellent case for the job, as said it has plenty of room to hide stuff around the back.

One major thing that helps it to work with each cable individually, to take the time to ensure that all of them are hidden to the best of your ability. Planning it out first may also help, such as seeing which cables could be routed in-between the motherboard and tray. Even if some things are very minor, if you address each part properly it can all add up to create a very clean looking system.

That's partly got to do with the direction of attention though, small bits of showing cables usually aren't noticeable when you glance at a system, so unless there aren't cables that are clearly present, you can still get a clean look. This is especially since the 760i has black cables, which may blend in decently with the case itself.

Also, hiding cables behind other components also works pretty well, even if it may be an inelegant solution. This may not be as relevant due to the great cable management features of the 500R, but there are small things like hiding fan cables behind larger power supply cables for a cleaner look. Like I've already said, every bit helps.

I agree with the previous post about raid ssd's. Really is pointless. One big one plus something like a momentus xt hybrid for larger storage. They're still really light and either double sided tape of adhesive velcro dots hold them easy enough on the back of motherboard trays.
Yeah good to see a 500r. I really like these. Very clean lines.
