5.1 speakers, but two are playing music!

Hi there, I hope this is forum is relevant for my problem.

I have been tearing my hair out trying to sort out this issue...

My friend gave me his Creative Inspire T6060 speakers (5.1), and I have connected it to my laptop. However, only the front two speakers are playing music/DVD's.

I have checked all of the connections and I know that all of the speakers work as they did on my friends computer. I have changed the settings to '5.1 surround sound speakers' on in the sound and audio device properties tab, but this made no difference.

Do I need to download a new driver so that all speakers work, or something like that?

In case this is any help, written in the sound device section in System Information is:

Name: USB Audio Device

Manufacturer (Generic USB Audio)

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers.

Erm, well i had trouble getting mine to work. So i downloaded the new drivers and they work now, however, mine plug into odd sockets, sockets i believe laptops dont have. Have you checked if the laptop supports 5.1 sound.

The speakers plug in via a usb connection.

Do you know how I'd go about checking if my laptop supports 5.1 sound? It's a three year old IBM thinkpad; the only information I can see about the audio properties is the words 'SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio'.

Thanks for the links!

The speakers connect via a usb adapter, from the 'Front out', 'Rear out' and 'Sub/cen out' connectors go in the sub console.

This is similar to the setup in the following image:

As far as I can see from the link you gave I have connected it correctly.

The adapter is a different manufacturer to that given in the picture in the previous post.

I haven't installed drivers for the adapter, I wasn't given a CD when the speakers were given to me. Do you think I will have to search the net to find the driver for the adapter? Perhaps that is the problem, but something must be working correctly if music is coming out of the front two speakers

I have found an image of the adapter:

The adapter product code is UB-003, made by Gstar

Right, drivers will probably be your problem then.

Can't think of how best to find them. The windows auto updater sometimes works.

when you plug in the adapter, do you get a new hardware found box? (assuming you are on XP. Actually, what OS are you?) If so, click that and let windows find the drivers for you of the internet. It can take a few minutes, but wait it out.

I am using XP

The first time I plugged it in, the 'found new hardware' box popped up. When I disconnect and reconnect the usb now nothing the box does not appear.

Ah. there will be a way to fix this, unfortunately, i can't remember it.

Hopefully someone who is wiser will check this thread. As it has a few posts now, it shouldn't take too long.
