4770K can't overclock to 4.2GHz @1.3V. Defective?

If you're at the latest bios tom's right (unsurprisingly), just go through his guide and just take small steps, you'll soon realise what the problem is. You might just be unfortunate.

That said the 4770K runs stupidly hot, 1.17v, custom watercooling (not the best, just a EK Supreme, MCP35X and EK CoolStream XT 240) and it will get the hottest core into the 80s during Prime95 (other cores will be in the 70s).

Also that seems really hot, I'm at 4.4Ghz at 1.255V and highest temp is max 80C with ambient of about 23C.

Are heat signatures consistent across CPUs or again is it silicon lottery for that?

I know right!?

But I believe it's a bit of a lottery based on Intel's idea to use TIM on the underside of the IHS. I guess some applications are better than others, that's my only explanation for the temps I'm getting anyway.

The pc is connected to the black one. The black is connected to the white and the white is connected to another one that plugs in the socket on the wall. I had to do this in order to reach the socket which is far away from my computer.

You should and then post your progress like a log, even if we just find out it is the CPU you will learn a lot in the process

Yes I followed the guide and it was very helpful but I do have a bad chip that is really voltage hungry. I settled with a 4.3GHz oc at 1.25 volts. To do 4.4 it needs 1.3v.. Maybe I will delid some time in the future so I can bump up the voltages without getting temps in the mid 80s range. I am currently working on getting the ram to be stable at frequencies higher than 1600MHz. Thank you all very much for your help!
