4 Pin MoBo; 3 Pin CPU Fan

Hi there,

Soon I will be upgrading CPU, and at the same time, a cooler.

But most of the coolers have/use 4 pins, whilst my mobo only has 3.

Sorry if I sound like a noob.

Thanks in advance!

I edited your post to remove the link.

A 4 pin will plug on to a 3 pin and work fine. And its far from all of them lots still use 3 pin fans dude.

Both work with each other though.

It should fine tbh, just make sure that it's the 4th PWM pin that's not attached to the header and it should run fine. Also, as it clearly doesnt have PWM the CPU fan will have to run at whatever voltage is coming out of the header, so if you want max cooling it'll have to have the full 12v.

Thanks for clearing it up!

Can you or someone else recommend a cooler for me? The CPU is a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ and I won't be overclocking.

Hmm, I'm no expert on AMD processors, but I usually hear that they run substantially cooler than Intel ones. Therefore, if you don't really want to spend much on a cooler that's better than the usual stock fluff, you good do worse than something cheap, but very cheerful like an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro which is less than £15 from Microdirect.

Obviously there's better heatsinks out there, but if you're not planning on overclocking there's not a whole lot of need for something more unless you're looking for pure silence, in which case I'd probably start looking at Noctuas.
