2700k or 3770k

Hey guys n gals!

I'm planning on replacing my 1100T soon, but i'm stuck between the 2700k and the 3770k... I'm pretty set on getting the Asus Maximus V GENE z77 board. Do you guys think it would be worth getting the 3770k over the 2700k? I was originally set on the IB route until the info about them running hotter and not being very good overclockers came out, so now i'm stuck and starting to lean more towards the 2700k. I will be planning on overclocking the CPU.

Well I am upgrading from Socket 1366 so I am going for Ivy Bridge right away. I read somewhere that improved models (I believe this is "improved stepping") may be released in the future so if you can afford to wait (which I can't really) then perhaps wait to see improved models.

Remember the native support of the latest generation things, and I also read a lot about Lucid MVP.

Also it depends on what cooler you'll be using for an overclock and how far you want to go of course

Its not that they will be bad overclockers its just that they wont be quite as good as SB

If they are similarly priced you should go with he 3770k, Native USB 3.0 and Lucid MVP

Temps won't be a problem if you have a decent cooling system (NH-D14/H100/custom cooling) and clock for clock IB will perform slightly better so overall you might see a little improvement over SB.

Waiting for the next step of IB (whenever that is, probably 6 months?) will bring you closer to the Haswell release which is likely to be much more of a better chip than IB (touch wood!).

Are you sure you need to upgrade your cpu at this time? I am in exactly the same boat and have just got rid of my 1100T:

If you are only gaming then I would expect an 1100T to support a 7xxx or 6xx card without bottlenecking since it performs as well as an 8150 in most tasks. Crossfire or sli on a 1100T with those cards would bottleneck though.

Don't bother getting a 2700k, a 2600k is the same chip if you overclock (they are just set to different clocks by intel).

Do you do anything that requires rendering or producing? A 2500k/3750k will perform as well at their HT brothers if not (I say this even though I just made a thread questioning whether a 2500k is sufficient for powering 2 of the latest gpus - but I now believe it can).

Let me try and sum that up for you:

If you game then I'd just save the money (or spend it on a better GPU) since I believe the 1100T will handle a modern GPU.

If you are planning on SLI/XF or just want a cpu upgrade then you will need an i5.

If you do something more intensive than gaming then you will want an i7.

As for whether to get the SB or IB versions of the i5 or i7 chips. Well IB is only going to be slightly better so you only want to be paying slightly more. You can get a 2500k off Aria for £144 at the moment so I'm not going to pay more than £170 for one. Same deal with the i7, a 2600k can be picked up for about £205 so I wouldn't pay more than £235 for the 3770k.

Id say 3770k, although don't get me wrong the 2600 and 2700k's are a riot, only think im worried about with Ivy is the temps, though less overall heat is good haha, the core just seems to be getting very hot in the bits ive seen,

The cooler I use is a NH-D14 so cooling shouldn't really be an issue, my CPU OC'd to 3.8ghz gets to 50 degrees max. The USB 3.0 support doesnt really bother me as I have no USB 3.0 peripherals, plus the mobos have the USB 3.0 controller built in anyway. An i7 chip will be perfect for me because I do video encoding which my CPU isn't really built for.. So a higher clocked SB i7 will probably be more ideal as it will probably still be cooler than an IB running at the same speeds, i'm not really interested in PCI 3.0 support because I know even the 680/7970s don't really take full advantage of 2.0 let alone 3.0

I disagree mate, I went from a 1055t at 4.2ghz to a stock 2500K and got much better frame rates in games, minimum fps is what increased the most.

I'd go for a 2600K for £209.99:

I'd go 2600k as you will be able to push it further than a 3770k. Hopefully you could pick up the 2600k for a good price when Ivy launches.

Decision made: Gone for a 2500k so I can save money for a new GPU and an SSD, going to be ordering no friday most likely, along with the maximus v gene

That surprises me, the 8150 is known to bottleneck 2 latest gen gpus but not one and a phenom II performs just as well as BD.

Only other point to make for the OP is that if you intend to xf/sli then a z77/3570k is needed for the PCI-e lane bandwidth since z68 will hamper 2 latest gen cards in certain games.
