1xSSD or HDD's in Raid, Who is faster

Game Over

Ok, So my dream of building a Gaming/Work rig with multiple SSD's in raid has been squashed now that I have learned that this in not possible with Trim.

I was mislead by a Computer Magazine article that stated that intel had found a fix for this with a new driver support. But Tim Logan told me there is no such thing, I know Tim knows his stuff so was like WTF? Went back to do further research and found that yes intel has trim support while using Raid, but only if you are raiding HDD's and have a single SSD, That is not what the article implied.

Well anyway, I know I can use a single SSD these days and have trim support so I can keep its performance.

Now, for my build I want to go with the best performance as far as pulling up programs, Load times etc, I want pure speed.

So what I want to know is,(disregarding cost, Noise, storage etc) what would be the superior setup as far as speed, A single SSD or up to 4 high end HDD's in Raid 0?

Or maybe there is another setup I am not thinking of that would be very fast, Im looking at gaming but also Video editing, CGI programs, etc

Thanks for any input guys.

If money is no matter then get an OCZ PCI-e SSD

.. If it is then get an SSD the Crucial C300 is supposed to be the quickest or a Kingston V+ 100 is another good option =]

thanks for the heads up, I just went to study some of those drives you mentioned, The PCI-e cards have peaked my interest. Though some are incredibly expensive, I found a Revo card that is 50% faster than the Crucial C300 and is half the price!. Its only 80GB but I would be using for running programs not as my main storage drive.

OCZ RevoDrive 80GB, 540 MB/S read and 450 MB/S write for $250 seems like a decent bang for the buck. But some people are reporting issues with it. Having a hard time getting it to work.

I was looking at a benchmark of 4 Raptors in Raid 0, it maxed out at under 350 MB/s read and under 300 MB/s write, So looks like even the low end Revo card puts a HDD raid to shame. And Im liking the price.

I am assuming these cards have their own trim or garbage collection solution? Or maybe its not an issue with them?

The Revo x2 160GB card, It has read speed of 740MB/s and write of 690MB/s at about $530.US. Thats about the most I would spend on a drive. I did not see really any real negative comments on it, And I think is about the same price as the C300

OCZ RevoDrive

Gives me something to look into.

Thanks

Another question, I have been looking at the PCI-e card, I read a review that stated that the card does not have TRIM, but does have Garbage collection.

I am wondering if the garbage collection will be sufficient to keep the SSD PCI-e card from slowing down? I am hoping so because I am really getting excited about putting one of these in my build.

If your looking at spending $500 then look into these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227646&cm_re=ibis-_-20-227-646-_-Product

Read speed upto 740mb/s :-) .. As for the garbage collection on pci-e cards I believe it has a custom 1 to work with the card to keep it snappy :-)

Wow, that thing looks like it could be very cool, I looked at its stats which looked Identical to the Revo card I was looking at, Price was very close Etc, but read more up on it and does seem to have some cool advantages.

First, by having the SSD connected to the PCI-e Card via a cable, they mentioned this would allow for upgrades on cards while being able to use the same SSD.

They also mentioned they are making a card with Raid controller that will allow you to hook up to 4 or these things at once! Wow, what kind of speeds would that get?

My main concern is the garbage collection crap, Does not matter how fast it is out of the box if its just going to get sluggish on you.
