SLi GTX 680 4GB vs XFire 7970 3GB

I am looking at buying a second GTX680 4GB or second 7970 for a multi GPU setup for my build. I am currently using a single 2560x1440 monitor but may add more (possibly two 24"s down the track).

I have both the 680 and 7970 and would rather keep them then buy a GTX 770 or 780 because in Australia the prices for the new gen cards are crazy... I can get another 7970 for $295 AUD or GTX680 4GB for around $350 AUD. However, I can buy the 7970 right now but I'd have to wait till someone has a 680 4GB card for sale. Both cards will be watercooled by the way.

Thanks

Sell both and get a 780 as an alternative?
AMD has runt frame issues. But they have announced a driver fix for that and will be released july 31. Which should resolve micro stutters and improper frame reporting. But after this driver update my guess is Xfire 7970s will beat(officially) SLI 680s.

ID say go for the AMD card, unless you can get a 680 with a water block already.

A single 780 costs more than twice the price of the 680 and 7970 here in Australia.

Yet a single 780 is far more future proof than either SLI/Xfire configuration. Sure you get more performance now but you are at the limit of upgradablility on your GPUs. Whereas a 780 will produce about 20% less FPS but in the long run adding another will get you far far more than either of the other two options. It's a never ending cycle. This is why many people always recommend the fastest card you can possibly get. Sell your cards now and use that money to pay for half the 780; or wait for prices to come down and then buy it.

Hm, I think I'll wait till the 7xx series cards come down in price.

the only problem with that is the cards you will be wanting to sell to pay for the new cards will also drop in value, so you may be waiting for nothing. and end up putting the same kinda $$ towards the deal anyways

I meant wait for the prices to come down for the 780. But as the post above me states; waiting may be pointless.

I suppose so but currently my 680 is doing me fine.

If you really want to SLI/Xfire then go 7970. Otherwise in my honest advice i would sell both and get a 780.
