Z97 or X99 new build

All,

Is X99 worth the extra £ over Z97 based rigs? I'm thinking about an upgrade to my current rig (i7 920 DO / 580GTX) to run 1440p and have the following options:

1 - Just upgrade my 580 GTX to a 980 or 970GTX
2 - As above but also move to Z97
3 - As 1 but move to X99

My additional challenge in the case of option 3 is that I run a M-ATX rig and want to continue to do so with options 2 and 3. M-ATX X99 boards are like rocking horse shit so that doesn't help either. The ASROCK X99M Fatal1ty is an option but choice in very limited.

With Z97 I would just get a GENE board....

Any thoughts?

Thanks:eek:

I would 100% get a Gene and a Devils Canyon chip for an mATX gaming rig. As for the GPU a single 970 would be a little lacking for 1440p in my opinion and it would be nicer to run a single card considering the form factor so a 980 seems like a good option to me.

It depends on what the Pc is for?
For gaming z97 and devils canyon would ideal combined with a gtx 980.
X99 if you do alot of video editting etc but for gaming the x99 is overkill and basically for bragging rights lol

Or...... Do I bin matx and get a atx rig kitted out with a maximus hero 7? Help! Been on a matx rig for years......

Unless you want to run SLI I see no problems with mATX, and if your going to run one badass card I see no reason to go SLI. Seriously you will love the MVIIG.

Thanks JR. I fancy a gigabyte 980 SOC. ... So should be good to roll at 1440p. Just hope the card will fit. Give TTL a nudge for me and ask him to post his thoughts here as he may well have a 240 and gigabyte 980 he could test for me. (crossed fingers).

The Air 240 was tested already, I prefer the 350D myself, i'm not sure the 240 is very sure of what it is. It's always seemed like an overgrown ITX case that just about coincidentally fits mATX boards, that might be because it is a mutant 250D. G1 SOC sounds good though, I think they look a lot smarter than the previous generation.

What are you running Eclipse?

What do you do on your PC (keep it clean please) and how has your move to X99 changed things for you? I'm all for getting the latest tech but also have to balance that with other things vying for my hard earned cash. As things stand, for me, the difference between Z97 and X99 is in the region of £250....

to be honest that difference isnt that much compared to what I had to pay, I literally have to fork out an extra $1000 or so for the x99 build compared to the z97 build I had planned

The best platform for gaming money no object is a 4790k devils canyon based one.

It is better than both X79 and X99.
