Z77 UD3H won't power off. Bizarre issue.

Hi there! Long time lurker here with a problem. I'll start off with my configuration.

My new build:
Gigabyte Z77-UD3H Motherboard
Intel i5-3570K Processor (OC'd to 4.2Ghz @ Normal -0.080v)
Noctua NH-D14 Cooler
Crucial 8GB (2x4Gb) DDR3 Ballistix Sport (CL10 1.5V) Memory
Asus Direct CUII GTX 670 Graphics Card (OC'd to +130Mhz core, +500Mhz Memory)
Coolermaster Silent Pro 700W Power Supply
Asus Xonar DX Soundcard
OCZ Agility 3 120GB SSD
2x Western Digital Blue 2.5" 500GB HDD
Liteon DVD Burner
Razer Abyssus Mouse
Razer Arctosa Mouse
Coolermaster Elite 334 Case

My issue is that 9 times out of the 10 the computer will not actually power down once reaching the "shutting down" screen in Windows 7. It's not unique to Windows 7 as it will do the same in any software that tries to send a reset/shutdown signal.

It will occasionally reset or shut down just fine. I have been unable to locate any sort of pattern as to why it does though.

Also if it fails to shut down in Windows 7, the "shutting down" icon will either spin infinitely, or sometimes freeze (indicating a system lockup I presume)

I've tried a whole manner of things, from resetting the CMOS, updating the firmware, changing power savings, voltage, multipliers, no luck.

Also I'd like to mention that otherwise the system is completely solid as tested rigorously through Prime95 and gaming over the past month. Not a single blue screen, failed test or crash. Temperatures reach a maximum of 73C when overclocked to 4.2Ghz @ Normal -0.080v. I'm not pushing higher because I like my system to be quiet. The same shut down issue happens on stock settings.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Note that the very latest bios on the Gigabyte that came out last week has been incorrectly zipped, and is the F8 release, and not the F18 release. Therefore I'm using the F17 release which is the latest actually available.

Not shutting down is normally a bios issue. I get it with the rampage 4 when running 2 dual cards (2x 690 for example)

Indeed it screams like a bad bios setting, but I can't find it anywhere, and it affects every bios revision I've used, even with a full hard CMOS reset.

Oh. Amazing. I've found the problem, and it's an odd one.

I think I've isolated it to my Edimax Wireless 802.11n USB dongle being incompatible with all the IO backplate USB ports (which are USB 3.0).

It works just fine when attached to the front panel USB which just happens to be connected to the motherboard's USB 2.0 connector.

Whether this is Edimax's fault, Gigabyte's or an inherent problem of USB 3.0 I have no idea.

I'll see how it fares over the next few days, but I've done 10 reboots in a row and all have shut down successfully.

Sorry to waste your time, but at least my posting sparked a lightbulb.

Cheers Tom.

That's happened to me before more than once. Last time it was a broken keyboard at work which was preventing the system from powering on. It's all a little bit trial and error :D
