I was looking on a different forum and someone posted there that if you do a clean install you don't need to re enter the keycode since it's all ready been converted to Windows 10 unless i'm miss reading it

Well he tried to do a full format after the update and it didn't work so he had to do all the upgrade route again so it must be something to do with Microsoft getting slammed ATM Though I'm sure it will just be temporary

Yes he just told me that he was able to do a clean install today and everything went well I was just comming in to edit my post but you beat me to it all good

I'm not sure what to do now i did the upgrade not sure if i should do a clean install tho, I might end up doing one just to get rid of the Windows 7 stuff

I thought about doing a clean install but decided to leave it for a while to see if I get any errors or new drivers come out that way it will be a full install with win10 drivers

Check for windows 8 or 8.1 drivers first, i think most of those would work fine on win 10.

And ofcourse do the upgrade first before doing a clean install.

Sorry for resurrecting a dead topic,but I have a question about windows 10 product key.

I'm in the process of a new build so decided to to a clean install of windows 10.

Thing is, I cannot find my product key anymore. I do of course have my windows 8.1 product key. Trying magic jelly bean in windows 10 returns some generic product key which I won't list here.

In order to activate windows 10, will I first have to install windows 8 and then do an upgrade? or can I do a clean install of win 10 and log in with my email which I used to register win10 without the need of my product key?

Since i believe it's new hardware, you'll have to upgrade from 8.1 to 10. Then you can immediately reinstall W10 from a fresh copy and then be fine.

Well just get your old copy of W8 and get it to 8.1 and then instantly upgrade. It won't take long then just do a reinstall of W10 with the correct ISO and it won't take that long either, then when it prompts you to enter your key, ignore it. After you get a network connection Windows server will recognize your system and activate for you.

Actually, I didnt need to enter a win10 key, even during the install.

I installed win 8.1 as suggested above, and then activated it. From there, I upgrade to win10 then deleted the windows.old. Worked like a charm. Seems it accepted my win8.1 key or converted it automatically.

From what I understand though, you can only pull out some generic key which most people can google. Same applies to magic jelly bean.

Anyway, with an SSD disk, doing what Feronix and NBD suggested took a massive... 10mins to get back to win10 status including the formatting of the SSD. So that method is fine for me. As long as I don't lose my win8 key im a happy chappy.

I can't find the article atm, however I did read that the November update for W10 is actually changing how the W10 product key system works so it's now easier for people who upgraded from 7/8 to 10 to now just install right away from an ISO/CD that has 10 on it and reusing your old 7/8 key and it'll automatically renew it and change it to 10. The update launched today iirc and is rolling out in stages.

I think you are correct there. based on the huge number of complaints for people activating, its the smart way to go.
