Hi guys.

So here is the scenario:

I'm starting from scratch, I'm building an entirely new build for (grades pending) Uni this September.

Budget (depends on when I get tax refund by) : Just under £1650, or £2500 by July 10th.

Here are the parts I plan to buy, I've left blank the bits I'm not sure about, and would appreciate any advice on any part.

This is for gaming, and working (i.e. Word processing, no heavy stuff), I'll also be uploading gaming videos to YouTube.

I want it to be quiet really, and will probably overclock.

So here goes:

Case: BitFenix Colossus Window c. £135 (Blue/White)

PSU: Corsair AX850W, c. £150

Motherboard: Asus P8Z68 V-Pro c. £150

CPU: Intel i5-2500K c. £150

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 c. £60

RAM: Mushkin Blackline 8GB 1600MHz 9-9-9-24 c. £75

GPU: MSI Twin Frozr GTX 580 c. £380

HDD: WD Green 1TB for storage c. £40

Keyboard:Logitech G15 c. £55

Mouse: Razer Deathadder c. £45

Mousepad: Roccat Sota c. £15

Monitor: VG236HE (Without Kit) c. £290, but £260 w/Tesco discount card.

Microphone: Random one c. £7

Surge Protector £10

Cross-over cable £3

To Order Later (After July 10th or before Uni)

OS: W7 HP x64 c. £70

SSD: Crucial M4 128GB c. £170

Fan Controller: NZXT Sentry 2 c. £25

Fans: NF-P14 FLX x5 c. £80

Optical Drive: LG BH10LS30 c. £65

Headset: Not a priority

Sound Card: Not a priority

Speakers: Not a priority

So for the things I've listed, its at about £1530 (£480 more after July 10th)

If I've missed out something bleeding obvious, please let me know

Anyway, if you guys have advice, I welcome it.

Oh and I'm not waiting for Bulldozer, this is my planned end of exam treat, and I think Intel is the way forward anyway.

Ordering just after 27th June

i would go xigmatek fans cuz they look awesome http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....87505&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_1563wt_1139 they are blue blades and white leds but the blades are a lighter blue

SSD i would get the OCZ agility or if your scared of OCZ crucial C300

blu-ray writer: http://www.cclonline.com/product/26...ay-Disc-Rewriter-and-DVDRW-Drive-OEM/CDR4530/

fan controller: i would get a zalman six channel controller

memory i would probably go with mushkin radioactive

and why not get a MSI p67a-gd55/65 both really good boards ya know

power supply yeah 850W ax seems to be the best choice

If you're going for silence then have a look at the Fractal R3.

Hmm, for me I really want a window, I remember looking at the Fractal R3 and the Antec P182/3, but the in-built lighting and window swung it for me

I was thinking that if I limit the internal noise, from the case fans, CPU cooler and GPU, then I should be good. And if the CPU Cooler is connected to the fan controller, then for work I think it will be really quiet with all fans on low? I hope anyway

nice choices

deffo noctua cooling bro.not sure when the new fans are out tho

Thanks

I like the idea of Noctua case fans because their colour goes with the CPU cooler, so it brings a kind of continuity to the scheme (White/Blue from the case, lighting and mobo, then the beige with fans and cooler). I could wait for the fans, do you know what size they will be? I know the existing fans are very highly rated.

Xigmatek ones do look good, are they variable RPM? That's important for me

Hmm, for the SSDs, I think Crucial would probably be better, heard some naughty things about the OCZ drives

Comes in nicely with my budget, if not I can always set up Linux for a while on the Storage drive and wait until 10th July to buy the SSD.

Blu-Ray writer looks good, is LG the best brand? I'm just used to the Blu-Ray in my PS3 ahah.

Is the Zalman fan controller this one? I saw that before, like it, forgot the name though ahha

And I think AX850W does look appealing to me, will update my OPost now

with a fan controller they would be wouldnt they? they are near silent anyways

LG are pretty good, dunno if they are the best

Yeah i would go with the crucial right now as well

yep it is that fan controller

Do you reckon its worth splashing out for the OCZ Vertex 3 all things considered, I'm thinking its not worth £50 extra. I'm looking for a 120GB/128GB, maybe 80GB if I'm really stretched, for Windows and stuff.

What are the good ones?

Crucial C300

Crucial M4

Intel ones are apparently not too fast but very reliable

For £150 for both the first choices, so that fits perfectly into my budget

Also do you reckon 3D is worth it? I'm really wondering about that. I've read the user review thing. Because its great for movies, I just like the idea of a cinematic effect when gaming/watching.

Quite happy this is nearly sorted out now

I personally stopped using it because it gave me some real bad headaches so whether it's worth it or not for me no but plenty of people like it, it's pretty good when your actually using it

Changed fan controller, there is only 5mm clearance between the drive bays and the door of the case, so had to get something flat.

I've also decided not to go for 3D, might get a 120Hz monitor, but I just can't justify to myself spending £100 extra and then some on 3D, especially when decent monitors are very expensive.

May get the 3D afterwards, but its a good monitor anyway, coupled with 120Hz, so it, plus the discount, caught my eye.

Also I'll run Linux for a little bit before I get Windows and the SSD.
