a run down: me doing a stupid click on a link which i regreted as 'soon' as i clicked it, some pathetic spyware/virus has entered my pc bascially it diverts my searchs to another page like ebay or some other random search engine etc, as well as little ads that pop up every now and again, my pc runs slower, freezes quite often and my web browser is slower than usual.. tried all the removal software under the sun and non have found it :(

i kind of need to refresh my pc anyway so i want to re-install my xp from fresh :) put the cd in, loads fine, but when it first restarts, it goes through the bios bit etc then where it should go onto the blue screen with the options etc for installing windows either leaves me with a blank black screen or a black screen with a flashing underscore at the top left, nothing can be entered via the keyboard etc

never had this problem before :( what could it be ?

Yes, he is. Look at his signature ;)

I have to say that I have never heard of this before. Have you tried to reinstall compeltely by deleting partitions and starting 100% afresh?

i would try that but how? i know i can do it during the xp install but i cant even get to it (goes black when it 'should' go blue and introduce me to the install) ive tried formatting .. but obvoiusly it wont let me format the drive where the main windows is

if its the virus thats doing this .. dam it must be clever xS

Start by setting your first boot device to CDROM in the BIOS, boot off that and then you should get taken through to a blue screen (remember to keep hitting enter during boot) and then you will get presented if you want to repair it etc. Follow the instructions to do a fresh install. You will eventually get faced with what partition/HDD you want to install it on. Once you're there, select all the drives and depending on what partition you have, hit D + Enter + L or D + Enter, then hit C on the newly created space. Make it the size you want (I usually just have one big drive, saves effort changing locations of installs later on etc.) then you're done, let it begin with the format (NTFS quick/normal if you have time) and the files will then copy over and the install will start again.

Let me know how you get on ;)

i no how to do it that way .. but the thing is it WONT even get to the blue screen, just a blank black one with a blinking underscore at the top left, no text ... nothing

its like it trys to go to the cd .. gives up and leaves me with the black screen

Nice post count Youngie ;) I was aware that Live CD's were only used in Linux as you need to actually install windows?

well... it doesnt install on the virtual pc either :(

however! it does go through the installation as it should do on my other pc

so there is obviously something wrong with my personal pc :*(
