Hi all,

Just out of curiosity does any one know if you can 3 way crossfire the Asus ROG R9 280X Matrix Platinum? I know it can 2 way etc.

Thanks,

Not unless you can find a motherboard with 9 mobo slots

Now that you mention it, the board that I thought could do it actually uses a separate PCIe slot for 2 way but reverts back to normal 2 slot spacing for 3 way +. However it has PCIe enable/disable function in the BIOS.

That said I have seen the Asus Z77 Maximus V Extreme work with 3 triple slot Asus GTX 680's. So in theory would the current VI version not offer the same ability?

Theory that a new product is the same as the old one? Id just look in the reviews if I was you fella.

I have read and watched your review on the product, so I know what your thoughts around it are :) However Asus does state that it has that feature much like the previous gen. So really I was wondering if anyone has actually used that feature to enable the running of 3 triple slot GPU's.

You just have to look at the mobo mate. Features isnt the same as layout. The new one is built for 4 GPU's its pretty simple by LOOKING at it to see 3x3slots wont fit.

What i mean by that is, would it be possible to make the board use the black PCIe slot in 3 way as opposed to just two way which is its default setup.

See what I mean? As it would be possible if that can be done etc. (Although it would be tight)

I know that this is just a "marketing pic" but it is from the Corsair website so it must be reasonably reputable.

Some motherboards like the RIVE will allow you to put 3 of the matrix cards on it by using the black PCI-E slot but it would be a very silly thing to do for two reasons.

The first problem is the heat, I run a setup with two HD 7970 matrix platinums on a RIVE and even with a gap between them they throw out a huge amount of heat, if I had three in there the heat generated with the cards almost touching each other would be a nightmare and almost impossible to keep cool.

The second reason not to do a three way setup using the black PCI-E slot is to do with getting the cards operating correctly. A guy I know on another forum tried it with 3 GTX 670s and it took him ages tweaking with the bios settings to get the cards running properly.

All in all the idea of using three Matrixs on the same mobo is a very bad option.

What is your performance like from them?

How hot do they get?

I have seen up to 77c when benching, for that card and cooler it is quite warm. Also all the heat getting dumped into the case can cause problems if there is not good airflow.

As far as HD 7970s go the performance is in the top tier.
