Xfire 280x performance gain ?

Hey so I'm running a 280x on a 15-2500k@4Ghz and struggling at 2560x1440 at about 30fps on most games like battlefield 1 and GTAV

I saw some 280x's going on ebay for £80, would buying another and putting them in xfire be worth it in terms of performance gain ? or would my CPU be the bottleneck and negate any increase

thanks

To be honest, I would advise you to just spring for something like an aftermarket 290x etc. It will provide pretty good performance for the price at 1440p. Either that or something like an RX 480 or 6GB version of the GTX 1060 if you want something new.

CF 280x is simply not going to be worth it considering the vRam limitation along with the poorer CF performance due to the bandwidth limitation of the CF connection.

Have you tried overclocking and just lowering some settings? I know many people still rocking a 7970 at 1440p and provided they make some compromises in the newer titles, they havent really had any complaints..

If you really wanted to you should see performance gains in some titles. BF tends to scale well afaik so it should do well for that series.

Otherwise I'd save up for a new card. A RX480 would probably do better than a Xfire 280x setup more often than not. I use my 480 at 1440p and I play at high/ultra with some minor tweaks here and there, mainly no AA as that kills performance.

The reason why I advised OP against CF at 1440p is cause of the frame consistency issue. The 280x is essentially a 7970 and they utilize the finger connectors and whilist AMD has improved quite a bit, it is still not very good for 1440p due to the bandwidth limitation.

Doesnt matter if it chucks out good FPS or not if it is going to provide a choppy experience either way.

an 8GB RX480 or 6GB 1060 is £250 atm and within budget
however won't my i5-2500k limit the performance ?

I have a 2500k @ 4Ghz and run 970 SLI so your CPU will be fine maybe not peak performance but your only lose a few fps nothing major.

Yep you'll be fine! Just sell the 280x and you'll spend even less:)
In DX12 for bf1, AMD is faster if that matters. GTAV Nvidia is faster. Really depends on what to play most. Both provide great experiences either way
