Hi all, new here.

Planning on building a brand new server but slightly unsure if an Xeon is better than and i7

Don't forget this is an home server build and i want the best

Thanks

Well, what kind of things are you expecting from your home server?
For the vast majority of home server cases, an i3 is overkill.

Hi Adam,

As Josh say's Xeon's will be overkill for a home server. The Xeon market is now heavily weighted towards machine virtualization.
The more important details are your network connections and your hard drive arrays and as these devices have become more and more capable they've offloaded cpu usage to such an extent that a simple home network server will not show any significant loading of a core 2 duo never mind an i3.
If you are running lots of back office applications, massive centralised oracle dbases, common multi user java applications or 100 user AD installations then I could possibly see some wisdom in going Xeon, otherwise it's massively over specified for what you may be trying to achieve.

What is it you want this home server to do?
